Forget that red lipstick is popping up everywhere ahead of the Fall season, beautiful red lips are make-up’s equivalent to the Little Black Dress. Statement-making, fresh and ultra feminine, red lips are a lot easier to pull off then you think. However, pulling off the successful look is less about your hair colour as many assume, and more the hues and undertones of your skin. With these tips in mind, you’ll be sporting the sophisticated look with ease, whether at work or at play.
Fair skin tones
For ladies with this skin tone, generally cool tones look best. So opt for a cool, true red colour or a vibrant red with a hint of pink undertone.
Check out Maybelline’s Color Sensational Lipcolor in Are You Red-dy, $9.50. Available at local drugstores.
Medium skin tones
Try to stay away from the cherry tomato reds and opt for cool reds with berry hues. Think raspberries.
Check out Clinique’s Different Lipstick in Angel Red, $18. Available at Clinique counters at The Bay.
Olive skin tones
Also avoid the tomato reds and instead opt for the rich burgundy’s. You’ll find they make your skin tone glow.
Check out NARS’ Lipstick in Sephora Flame, $30. Available at Holt Renfrew and Sephora.
Dark skin tones
You ladies have a bit of free reign here. Most reds look amazing on your skin tone so try a deep raspberry or bronzy brown red.
Check out MAC’s Lipstick in Hang-Up, $17.50. Available at MAC Cosmetics.
General
Before you venture to the world on hot red lips, make sure you whiten those pearly whites of yours. Dark lipsticks can highlight a multitude of sins, so banish the evidence with good whitening products.
Don’t forget to line your lips first with a matching lip liner. You’ll notice the colour will last twice as long if not more.
Try Bobbi Brown’s Lip Liner in Red, $27. Available at Holt Renfrew.
Keep the rest of your makeup simple and understated. With eyes and lips done up, you run the risk of looking vampy or too done up. Keep it simple and with one area as the focal point.
