Believe it or not, but we’ve been waxing away our unwanted body hair at home. And yes, you read that correctly. And no, we’re not screaming in pain like Monica and Phoebe on that 1990’s episode of Friends, when the women used a questionable waxing kit bought from an even more questionable late-night infomercial.
No, this is different. We’re using Sliick’s At-Home Microwave Waxing Kit and it’s so good and easy to use it makes the case for ditching our local aesthetician.
Specifically designed to bring salon-style waxing home—minus the intimidating learning curve—this DIY hair-removal system uses hard wax pellets that melt in the microwave. The pellets themselves are worth noting. For one, they’re purple. They’re also small and their uniform size helps them melt evenly into a smooth, honey-like consistency, rather than the clumpy texture many of us equate to at-home waxes.
To heat them, all we have to do is pour our desired amount of wax pellets into the silicone cup included in the kit and pop it into the microwave. Set the timer for 45 seconds, remove the cup, stir the wax and pop it back into the microwave for additional 45-second intervals as needed. The wax should have a thick, caramel-like consistency. If it drizzles easily from the spatula (also provided in the kit), it’s ready.
Once the pellets have melted, with the spatula, apply a thin layer of the wax in the direction of the hair growth, allow it to cool until pliable. Because the wax grips our legs, arms, underarm and bikini hair only, not our skin, it makes the removal process gentle. Simply lift the edge of wax up and pull it off your skin against the grain. Toss the wax into the bin and admire your long-lasting smooth skin. Word to the wise: after waxing, avoid heat, exfoliation and skincare containing active ingredients for 24 hours. Then, bare whatever hair-free body parts you dare.
