In January 2024, after John Galliano’s Maison Margiela spring/summer 2024 couture show in Paris, the internet went into a frenzy trying to recreate the look of the model’s iconic glass make-up. In the show the models walked the runway under a full moon by the Seine resembling perfect porcelain dolls with impossibly glowy skin, stunning eyeshadow, penciled-in brows, and bold lips, all courtesy of legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath. McGrath apparently wanted to make sure each model’s glazed skin looked as if it was kissed by the moonlight and beauty enthusiast went wild in the weeks following the show trying to recreate the haute couture beauty look at home. Now, almost exactly a year after the iconic runway moment, McGrath is set to launch Skin Fetish: Glass 001 Artistry Mask, a peel-off mask that, when applied and set, gives the glass-like radiance that captivated the audience that night. The added bonus? The glass skin mask is packed with skincare ingredients like glycerin, rose flower water and allantoin to soothe, refresh and rejuvenate the skin.
Interestingly, the peel-off, pore-blurring gel mask, which is set to launch at the end of this month, was inspired by all of the at-home tutorials that dominated the internet in the days and weeks following the show.
“Those viral recreations were everything, I watched every single one,” McGrath says. “I really wanted to create something that honoured their enthusiasm while making that radiant, glass-skin moment accessible to everyone – not just for the runway or social media but for anyone who wants to feel luminous in their everyday life.”
When applying the glass skin mask, McGrath recommends that you “take your time, enjoy the process and think of it as a moment of self-care.” Simply use a make-up brush to apply thin, even layers across your face in stages. “Start with a single, thin layer to get a feel for the texture and drying time,” says McGrath. “Make sure to let each layer dry completely before applying the next – this ensures the finish is smooth and even.” While applying the layers, it’s best to keep your brush damp with water and then dip it back into the product. Once fully dried, the mask has a lacquer-like film that can be easily peeled off.
Like so many of McGrath’s products, the Glass 001 Artistry Mask is designed to be experimented with. You can apply it on bare skin or over make-up, add as many layers as you like and even use it to add a plastic highlight to certain high points of your face (like your cheekbones) if you don’t want the all-over porcelain look.
According to McGrath, wearing the Glass 001 Artistry Mask anywhere you want is entirely the point. “I love the idea of people taking their glass skin glow anywhere – whether it’s to the grocery store, shopping or even just lounging at home,” she says. “I want people to find joy in radiance, no matter where they are.”
Skin Fetish: Glass 001 Artistry Mask will launch on January 30, 2025 exclusively at patmcgrath.com.
