Ten years ago, I shuddered when a friend told me she didn’t wear makeup. Not even lipstick. Well, life has a way of turning on you, because I’ve caught myself looking pretty plain-Jane with not a stitch of makeup on my face in more than one Instagram post lately. Not even wearing my go-to tinted lip balm. And it’s not cute, not even with Rise or Lark filters. So I’ve vowed to boost my GAF factor back up to where it belongs.
Enter Kat Von D’s beauty-rut-breaking product Studded Kiss Creme Lipstick in “Mother.” The television personality and American tattoo artist herself (Kat Von D, that is) describes the high-impact colour as being a satin matte, dusty mauve pink on her website. On my lips, it looks more fuchsia and chic in a pulled-together “I’ve got places to go and cool things to do”, kind of way. Plus, the bullet is creamy, moisturizing and easy to apply.
Its pop of glamour reminds me of when I used to play with cosmetics — as a young girl, then later as a beauty editor — and I’d get all excited about swiping on the newest, prettiest shade of pink lipstick I could find. Inevitably, I’d gravitate towards a berry or fuchsia hue. They work really well with my pale skin tone and blonde hair. But clearly, the busy-busy of life temporarily transformed me into someone who just writes about beauty and doesn’t have fun with it. Well, that’s over. This “Mother” is reminding me to not fall back into that particular beauty rut again. But just in case I forget, I’m snapping a selfie of me wearing the pretty shade and posting it, stat.
