In this monthly column, our fragrance writer Adriana Ermter will have you spritzing and dishing on the latest must-have scents.
You know when you want to have more than one perfume in your rotation, but you want at least one of those scents to be different, make you stand out, have people asking: “what are you wearing?” Thierry Mugler’s Alien Musc Mysterieux is that fragrance.
For starters, it’s a Mugler and we all know how the man behind the brand likes to create a buzz. So much so that an exhibit of 130 of his ready-to-wear and haute couture creations from 1973 to 2001, as well as his work as a director, photographer and perfumer, will be featured at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in February 2019. The designer is definitely worthy of a little hoopla.
After all, his fantastical, haute couture runway shows are renowned for being a brilliant blur of feathers, superhero hardware and sequins. And he did put the heady, girlishly cotton candy-scented Angel on every woman’s most-wanted spritz list during the ’90s grunge decade when dabbing on clean, barely there, lemon-fresh scents were the only way to go.
Alien Musc Mystérieux is just as unique. Sure, it’s loyal to its predecessor Alien’s DNA of jasmine flowers and cashmeran wood. This version however, also contains a few new notes, beginning with saffron flower and spices that when first sprayed on make you question if you actually like the scent. But you do. Because the way those two notes ease into the carnal goodness of its DNA can only be described as bewitching. Like the best juxtaposition of dirty/sexy, complete with a sensual finale of white musk wrapped in warm vanilla.
But you’ll need to spritz soon. This parfum is limited edition. Maybe that’s a good thing. Because when people ask where they can buy a bottle, you can honestly look regretful when you tell them it is a once-in-a-lifetime scent.
Thierry Mugler, Alien Musc Mystérieux EDP, Limited Edition, $185 for 90 ml, exclusively at Hudson’s Bay stores across Canada.
