Fragrance Of The Month: D.S. & Durga, D.S.

If you’re ever asked what happens when a New York musician and architect come together the answer is fragrance. A sublime, unusual, wearable, definable fragrance.

At least it is if said musician is David Seth Moltz (D.S.) and the architect is none other than Kavi Moltz (Durga), who built their eponymous perfume house in 2007 with the intention of bringing moments, places, music and books to life through scent. Their most recent creation, D.S. is a gender-free, warm and spicy floral with decadent undertones of dark and oily agarwood that, with just one spritz, magic carpets you to the heart of India.

Courtesy of spicy saffron and heady frangipani and gardenia blooms, the yellow-hued eau opens on a sensual note before seeping into a dark pool of smoky-sweet agarwood layered with fresh yellow lotus and exotic rose absolute. Earthy sandalwood, intimate musc ambrette and tart vetiver complete the parfum, grounding it with an inexplicable sense of crowded markets, staggering landscapes and brilliant colours.

Honouring the history and depth of its inspiring locale, the elixir is made in small batches, using a timeless and traditional method—the oil-based notes are distilled into a sandalwood base, then aged before being poured into black-capped, heavy glass and cylinder-shaped bottles. Each bottle is housed in recyclable paper marked inside with typed musings from David, sharing fragrant insight, stories and the heart and soul of D.S. & Durga.

D.S. & Durga, D.S. EDP, US$350 for 50 ml, available online at www.dsanddurga.com.
