Beauty Review: Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips

Nail polish has really evolved over the years. We’ve seen it all: From regular enamel to glitter, shatter, sparkle suede and matte. Now, I think I’ve really seen it all. Sally Hansen has released the newest in nail fashion: Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips, $10 (available at select drugstores and Wal-Mart across Canada).

What It Is:
It’s a nail polish strip (although it looks a lot like a sticker). The effects are supposed to last up to 10 days and range from hot neon shades and over-the-top glitter to lace designs (I chose to use Laced Up). The best part of these strips is it eliminates the waiting to dry part of painting your nails. I can’t tell you how happy I was knowing that once the strips were applied, I was ready to pull my jeans on, apply my makeup, and lace up my shoes without worrying about ruining my wet nails.

How It Works:
The designs come in a kit, which includes 16 strips, one nail filer, one wooden cuticle stick and instructions on how to apply, and remove the strips. The tricky part is application, make sure you’ve got at least 10 minutes to spare in order to apply the strips right. Precision and patience is key. Make use of the cuticle stick, the more you can push your cuticles down the more room you allow for the strips and the nicer the finished product looks. The stickers were quite small for my fingers so holding on and applying them to fit to my nail was a tedious task.

A few times I didn’t place the sticker evenly but I was able to pull it off and try again. I encountered some problems when smoothing the sticker over my nail since my nails have a slight curve, a few times a crease was created because of this, and I had to redo it. Some of the strips were too big for my nail “ although it does provide different sizes.

Therefore, I had to cut a few, which added to the overall time consumption but in the end paid off. The nail file comes in handy for removing excess at the sides and top (the strips are made long to fit all lengths of nails). Beware of the mistake I made, impatience kicked in so I started tearing away excess from the top which led to uneven tips “ luckily the kit provides 6 extras. Overall, the application process took me 10 minutes but the results exceeded my expectations “ in a good way.

The Verdict Is:
The effect lasted (at least in my case) 6 days. By the 5th day, the strip began to lift off my nail from the bottom, which caused a lot of hair tugging “ not fun. Usually when I use regular nail polish, it starts to chip away by the 3rd day, so already Salon Effects lasted much longer. I also found that it took a lot longer to remove the strips then regular nail polish. So be prepared for a delayed and sticky removal process.

Is It Worth the Hype:
Although the strips are not as easy to apply as I would have liked, the result was amazing. Compliments went through the roof with this nail effect. It’s great for us girls who love nail art but don’t have the mooula to go to the salon every week. The best part was avoiding drying time. With so many effects to choose from, it’s also fun to switch it up every now and then.

What do you think of the end results?

These are truely amazing!! Yours look great as well. I currently have the booty camp on. (the pink camo) I love these. My friend has the check it out on and has had them on for 7 days and so far look perfect. Some of the strips were a bit big for my nails beds so I found myself cutting them down to fit better, which definitely took more time but will NOT stop me from using these at all. I have gotten many compliments already and it does last longer than regular polish. These are a great investment. An added tip….be sure to add a top coat after applying strips to each nail as this will make them last much longer. Good luck. Hope everyone loves them as much as my friend and I do.
