Return of 90s Fashion

Everything old is new again this season “ designers are having a love affair with the 90s with high-waisted jeans and oversize plaid button-ups. However, while you may shudder at the sight of overalls, rave pants, or butterfly clips, there are certain looks that have returned and need not be feared.  Here are four 90s looks that should be embraced:

Oversize Plaid

With heat and humidity in our midst, the idea of anything with sleeves might be a turn-off, but on days where a sweater’s too much and a tank’s not enough, the oversize button-up is there to serve a purpose.  Whether worn over a tank and shorts like a jacket or with tights and a belt cinched at the waist, the 90s grunge look has returned in full force, and with the likes of Agyness Deyn flaunting it everywhere from music festivals to nights on the town, you can put on that vintage XL plaid piece with confidence.

Wrap Skirts

The token attire of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman circa Practical Magic, the shorter version of the printed wrap skirt has fearlessly returned to offer refuge from those hot summer days where shorts seem too much.  Flaunting a high waist and a classic print (think traditional florals based on your mother’s wardrobe), the kitsch factor can be toned down with a solid tank or t-shirt, or even a thrifted blouse paired with knee socks and clogs.  So not only will you have the allure of a woman who defines fashion forward, but you’ll have the credibility of saying, oh, I bought it for $2 to the dismay of everyone.

Clogs

Speaking of clogs, there’s a reason designers like Chanel have invested countless dollars into the season’s hottest footwear, and that’s because the return of yesterday can’t be denied.  With fashionistas like Alexa Chung embracing the slip-on clog or chunky-heeled sandal (straight out of the closet of Cher Horowitz), the flexibility of 90s fashion is obvious.  Whether worn with shorts, tights and a tailored tank, or with a floral sundress that would make Sabrina the Teenage Witch proud, clogs are the classic choice for adding edge to any outfit.

Onesies

Not to be confused with bodysuits, onesies have gone from fashion faux-pas to this year’s must-have, with designers and chains like Urban Outfitters and H&M jumping on the super youth-inspired bandwagon.  Like a dress, but with shorts (remember skorts, ladies?), the onesie is the playful answer to dressing up, worn ideally with desert boots to complete the 90s throwback, or with gladiators to keep things looking modern.  Whether brand new or off the vintage rack, one-pieces are the perfect solution to a night on the town, proving that while fashion-conscious, you’re not afraid to have fun.
