Ways to Find New Friendships

Not all of us can afford to host our own television show in search of a new BFF. And with back to school in full force it’s understandable to get a bit nostalgic about the days of sharing lunches, having sleepovers and meeting new roommates. Don’t spend another night alone watching Golden Girls re-runs or dragging your boyfriend to Drew Barrymore’s latest romantic comedy. Here are 5 ways to finding friendship after 25.

Proximity Equals Likeness

Psychologists believe you’re more likely to form friendships with the people you see most often. Get to know your neighbours, work colleagues and local store owners if you can. You speak to them on a daily basis anyway, why not try sparking a more electric conversation and seeing if it leads anywhere. You’ll be surprised by the juicy stories that can come out of chatting with neighbours.

Join the Club

Sign up for a sports team, dance class or cooking course to meet like minded gals on a regular basis. You’ll already have something passionate in common and a fixed schedule for play dates. Don’t be shy to invite the team out for beers, the dance class over for tea or the cooking class to your next dinner party.

Music Mates

Music has often been a universal language bringing people physically and emotionally together. Live music shows are a fun and fearless environment to let loose, be yourself and meet interesting people. Take a breather outside near the smoking section to overhear or join in on intriguing conversation and don’t forget to go powder your nose since bathroom bonding is inevitable for girls.

Blasts from the Past

With social networking at our finger tips there is no excuse for losing touch with old friends. There are multiple platforms of communication to choose from to check up on your old BFF-it’s almost creepy. And don’t forget a good old fashion phone call, hearing a voice you’ve known for years can remind you of who you are.

My BFF blows. Last year, during a time when I swear I was so depressed I was like starting to collect sleeping pills, I asked her if she could spend my birthday with me because I had nobody to spend it with and she said she couldn’t because of the Project Runway premier. I was like I can come over and watch it with you, but she was like no it’s okay. I have been holding a grudge for months. Thanks for the advice! Now I think I am going to look for a new BFF. I just hope the girls I try to befriend don’t think I’m gay and trying to pick them up!
    P.S. I’m not depressed anymore.
