How to Find Your Perfect Fragrance

Your fragrance should reflect you “ your personality, your lifestyle, and the scents you love!

Here are some tips to help you find one you’ll adore. Remember that fragrance consists of different notes: a top note (the first scent you smell), the middle notes (the scent after about fifteen minutes) and a base note (the lingering scent after a few hours).

Fragrance Categories:

Fresh – These are perfect for work, as they are usually light and energetic smelling. The first note is usually grass or lemon, supported by florals or spices. CK One is a good fresh perfume to try.

Floral “ Flowery scents are ideal for you romantics out there. They usually consist of one central scent that is surrounded by other notes such as citrus or vanilla. Juicy Couture by Juicy Couture is a lovely floral.

Oriental “ These are for the bold. The top note is usually citrus, surrounded by woody or spicy scents. Think Pure Poison by Christian Dior or Dream Angels Heavenly from Victoria’s Secret.

Woody – Woody perfumes are great for adventurous, outdoorsy girls. The top note is usually green, with supporting fruity notes, often times combined with musk. Angel by Thierry Mugler is a great example of a strong woody perfume.

Tips for Trying & Wearing a Fragrance:

  • When trying out a fragrance, lightly spray your wrists but don’t rub them together. And don’t try more than two fragrances at a time “ you’ll mix the scents and not be able to differentiate between them.
  • If you can’t stop at two, take advantage of the small dish of coffee beans many perfume counters display. Breathe in the coffee scent to cleanse your palate before testing more.
  • Try shopping for fragrance in the afternoon, as your sense of smell will be sharper.
  • Don’t spray on too much; if you really love a scent and want it to linger, layer it. Use the scented body wash, lotion, and eau de perfume. You don’t want your fragrance to enter a room before you do.
  • Perfume smells differently on everyone due to body chemistry, so don’t purchase a scent because you love it on your best friend. Make sure you test before you invest.

There are two perfumes that I cannot do without, and they were originally given to me as gifts by my wonderful husband several years ago. The one that I wear the most is Aromatics Elixer by Clinique, which, when my husband originally bought it, was carried exclusively by Holt Renfrew . It is now available in other locations, and I’m not sure if Holts even carries it now. It’s a lovely perfume that can be worn at any time, day or evening. And men seem to like it a lot. The other one, which unfortunately has been discontinued, is called Montana by Claude Montana, and it is exquisite. My husband also bought this for me several years ago, but when it came time to replace it a couple of years ago, we were quite shocked to discover that it had been discontinued. So I searched for it on eBay over a period of a couple of weeks and was finally lucky enough to get a full bottle of it from a seller in France. So as long as I know that I can still get it somewhere, I’m a happy camper.
