Haircut Tips for Women

You know the drill: you flip through countless magazines and rip out endless pictures of hairstyles you wish you had.

Then you convince your stylist to do something out of the ordinary–like give you bangs, even though you’re partial to always clipping them back–and then you get stuck waiting for them to grow out.

Sound familiar? The next time you get a haircut, it’s going to be easy (we promise!) since we’ve got your back with the following tips.

1. Always arrive 15 to 20 minutes early for a consultation–that way your stylist won’t feel rushed when you pull out a file folder of every different style you’ve liked in the last year (see tip two). When booking an appointment, mention you’d like a consultation before you start–these are usually complimentary.

2. Resist the urge to bring pictures of every possible style you can find and narrow it down to your five favorites. This will give your stylist a clear direction of what you like.

3. Tell your stylist a bit about yourself and your day-to-day life. Not all haircuts work for everyone’s lifestyle, so be honest when she asks how often you like to wash your tresses and whether you don’t mind getting up at 5:30am to style your hair for work.

4. Work with your natural hair texture. Sure you’d love to have that just-came-from-a-salon-blowout all the time, but if you can’t do it yourself everyday in 10 minutes or less, are you really going to take the time when you’re already late? Choose a cut that requires less maintenance and works with your texture and you’ll be surprised to find it will fall into place even when there’s no time to blowdry.

5. Speak up! If you know you don’t like something, let your stylist know. They can’t control what’s going on in your head, but they can control how it looks, so if you’d like those layers a bit longer so you can pull it back when you’re at the gym, let them know before it’s too late. They’ll appreciate the honesty and you’ll appreciate having a go-to stylist.
