Stop Slut-Shaming Kylie Jenner and Everyone, Thanks

Well, here we are into a brand new week, fresh off the holiday and feeling great–JK, the world is a vampire and whatever-the-hell-else Billy Corgan once said.

But this time, it isn’t about the American election, it’s about Kylie Jenner. Specifically, about how she posted a photo of herself on Instagram in her underwear, then received a comment that she looked like a “14-year-old prostitute.”

Woof.

And then Kylie responded with, “Idk I think I look like a 19 year old prostitute.”

Okay! So let’s break this down:

1) Being a prostitute is not a bad thing. You can not use “prostitute” as an insult. Shaming sex workers is an obsolete, offensive, embarrassing thing to do. I don’t know why this is still a conversation we still need to keep having in the year of our lord 2016, but here we are. So let’s say it together: sex workers are not the butt of your joke. So walk into the sea if that’s your sense of humour, thank you.

2) Kudos to Kylie for not taking the bait. Again, because being a sex worker is not just insult fodder, thanks for coming out.

3) Being bothered about a grown-ass woman posting a photo of herself wearing underwear on Instagram is really, really weird. It is bizarre to be so enraged about a person’s social media content — that is in no way offensive or upsetting — that you have to freak the fuck out on your own social media account. And maybe if you are enraged, you should ask yourself the following questions:

– Why are you so mad at something that has nothing to do with you?

– Why do you feel threatened by something that has nothing to do with you?

– Why are you shaming a person who has no idea who you are for something they are totally welcome to do?

– Why do you feel women should abide by a certain code? (Because that is 100% what this is about, by the way.)

– Why are you even looking at what a person you obviously don’t like happens to be doing?

– What is your glitch, man? (Say this like Ben Stiller in Reality Bites, please.)

You don’t have to like Kylie Jenner. You don’t have to like anybody you don’t want to. But you do have to respect their right to do whatever they want, provided nobody is getting hurt in the process. Especially because this is just Kylie showing off her undies and, I’m sorry, but that isn’t offensive. Anybody showing off their undies isn’t offensive, provided they are consenting adults controlling their own narratives. Which I feel like I have written about 259285259 times this year, but here we are, well into October, and someone’s dragged sex workers into their bullshit argument, too.

So, no. Stop. I am tired and my coffee maker broke and I do not have the energy to deal with this nonsense. Sort yourself out, and keep your eyes on your own paper. Which means that if you are so irate at Kylie Jenner’s Instagram feed that you have to lose your shit on Twitter dot com, you need a nap and a book and to get off the internet until you’ve sorted yourself out.

And for the love of all that is good, remember that sex workers are not your fast track to an LOL. But I know you know that already.
