Every so often social media throws something at you that stops you in your tracks. This time around it is a video called ‘Be a lady, they said.’
Published by Girls.Girls.Girls magazine, the 3 minute video features actress Cynthia Nixon (of Sex And The City fame) reciting the words of a powerful piece written by blogger Camille Rainville back in 2017.
“Be a lady they said. Your skirt is too short. Your shirt is too low. Don’t show so much skin. Cover up. Leave something to the imagination. Don’t be a temptress. Men can’t control themselves. Men have needs. Look sexy. Look hot. Don’t be so provocative. You’re asking for it. Wear black. Wear heels. You’re too dressed up. You’re too dressed down. You look like you’ve let yourself go.”
That is just a snippet of what is said in the nearly 3 minute video… A reminder that women are the constant recipients of criticism no matter what they do or what they don’t do.
