It’s not an exaggeration to say that we’ve seen our fair share of beauty products come across our desks at 29Secrets. And we definitely have certain products that we get super excited about: red and nude matte lipsticks (of which there are a multitude for fall); the latest mascaras, with their increasingly technical applicator wands; and skincare — just about anything and everything skincare (but especially masks and cleansing balms). As for eyeshadow, it’s not usually something that sets our hearts aflutter, but Marc Jacobs Beauty has done just that with its new Eye-Conic Multi-Finish Eyeshadow Palettes. Consider us obsessed.
First, the details: these are six new shadow palettes featuring seven shades in a variety of finishes, including matte velvet, shimmering satin, sparkling silk and metallic lame (all of which are inspired by the textile layering seen in Marc Jacobs’s fashion shows). “Smartorial” features blues and grays; “Scandalust” has a mix of warm browns and reds; “Frivoluxe” includes greige to violet; “Provocouture” features plums all the way to magenta; “Edgitorial” has khaki greens and gold; and “Glambition” features neutrals and bronze. Apparently Marc Jacobs Beauty discontinued its previous eyeshadow palettes and introduced Eye-Conic to replace all of them; we never tried the old ones, so we can’t speak for them, but these new ones are well worth your attention.
The idea behind the palettes is that you can layer the shadows to create an endless array of looks, finishes and tones. And the shades are jaw-droppingly gorgeous, but also, it needs to be said, incredibly wearable. Too often, eyeshadow palettes contain shades we’d never dare to use, but the Eye-Conic palettes are expertly curated, with a generous portion of neutral shades, plus a “pop” shade that makes them go disco.
The shadows are super pigmented (even without using a primer) and can be used wet or dry for even more impact. But, as makeup artist and MJB ambassador Michael Ashton told Refinery29: I find that they look like they’re wet even though they’re not, because the colour payoff is so intense.” The creamy, almost buttery consistency also makes them highly blendable and easy to apply. We’re also fans of the trademark sleek, black lacquer-esque packaging that’s compact enough to stash in your purse.
As far as shades go, all of the the palettes are winners, but we’re partial to the browny bronze Glambition and the rusty-red Scandalust to get that amazing red eye that’s literally everywhere right now. (We’re pretty sure Scandalust was used on model Kaia Gerber, above, who stars in the Eye-Conic ad campaign, looking FIERCE).
If you’re not yet convinced, know this: these shadows are a joy to play with and even encourage us to dabble with even the most shockingly pigmented shades. And who doesn’t need to push their beauty boundaries every once in a while?
