You know who doesn’t have time for body shamers? Me. You. Most people. And Daisy Ridley who served some cold, hard truth to an Instagram troll who called her too skinny. Or, more specifically, accused her of setting “unrealistic expectations.”
“I can’t believe the unrealistic expectations I’m setting for young girls,” the troll posted as part of a meme (in which said quote is posted in a Photoshopped speech bubble. “Who cast me anyway? Don’t they know real women have curves?”
And, like, hell no.
So at first, Ridley replied to the user directly (as we all dream of doing to any idiot on social media who speaks fluent bullshit).
“‘Real women’ are all shapes and sizes, all ethnicities, all levels of brave, have families, don’t have families,” she wrote. “I am a ‘real woman’ like every other woman in this world.”
But then, after the creator of said meme received the wrath of Ridley’s fanbase and anybody else even remotely reasonable, she deleted her post and created a new one:
“I will not apologize for how I look, what I say, and how I live my life ’cause what’s happening inside is much more important anyway and I am striving to be the best version of myself, even if I stumble along the way. It seems apt I get tagged in this a day after I received misogynistic comments on my [International Women’s Day] post.”
“For anyone who has a problem with ANYONE in life, be them someone you know or someone you don’t, remember that expression, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all. Kindness isn’t going to cure the world of all its awfulness but it’s a good place to begin.”
So first, let’s all ensure the happiness of Daisy Ridley always and forever. Secondly, she’s right: a “real woman” looks the way she wants to. That’s it. Curves are great! No curves are great! Everything’s great! We’re all great! Policing in any capacity is damaging to every living person! The fact we’re not understanding this is alarming and making me use a lot of exclamation marks so as not to look like I’m standing at my desk and pounding my shoe on the desk! Help me!
But look: Daisy Ridley is beautiful. Get off her case, weirdo troll. Get off everybody’s cases! What’s wrong with everyone? Here’s my advice: if you’re ever bothered to the point of needing to create a meme about the way somebody looks, simple follow these steps: turn off your computer, break it apart, and toss the remnants gently into the sea.
