Brow Shaping 101

Remember that girl in your homeroom that fell subject to emotionally plucking her brows? Unforunate on so many accounts. Your brows not only have a physical use (they stop the sweat from entering the eye during your hot yoga class) they are also one of the best ways to define and highlight the features of your face. So for you and the emotional tweezer, here are a few general rules to remember when shaping your brow:

Find the beginning:
Take a ruler and draw an imaginary straight line starting at the inner corner of your eye, this is where the brow should begin. If you are hesitant than have the brow extend further than this point. The key here is to ensure that the brow doesn’t start after the corner of the eye.

Find the end:
This time, take your ruler and place it at the side edge of your nose and extend it to the other corner of your eye. This is where the brow should end. For those that love a little drama, you can extend it a little further for special occasions with a brow pencil.

Finding your (arch)etype?
The general shape of the brow is likely the hardest part of brow-grooming because the ideal varies from face to face. Here’s a little brow-guidance for the six-most common face types:

Oval: The shape used for most brow stencils, go for the popular soft angled brow.
Celebrity brow muse: Jennifer Aniston

Heart: Opt for rounded brows where the curve of the brow is soft, creating a heart like look of the face.
Celebrity brow muse: Gwyneth Paltrow

Long: It’s said that horizontal brows will shorten the look of the face and stop the eye from moving up and down.
Celebrity brow muse: Jennifer Love Hewitt

Round: Focus on creating as high of an arch as possible to add length to the face.
Celebrity brow muse: Mila Kunis

Square: A thicker stronger color and shape will balance a heavier jawline. A defined sharp peak at the top of the brow will make the brow appear stronger, complimenting your square angles.
Celebrity brow muse: Cameron Diaz

Diamond: You can soften the angels of your face with a curvy brow. This will also make the widest portion of your face to appear less wide.
Celebrity brow muse: Christy Turlington

If you have a mishap or feel like dressing up your brows to look more pronounced than usual, invest in a really good eyebrow pencil and brush. Always pick the shade that’s closest to your natural brow color. If you’re in between two shades, choose the lighter shade for a more natural look or the darker shade if you would like to increase the definition. Be sure to blend well by using the brow brush.
