Tempting White Lies

Ladies, we’re no strangers to faking it: Our hair, nails, cup sizes; every day we fudge, ahem, enhance aspects of our appearance, and of course, the opposite sex takes notice. But once you’re in a relationship, how far should you take these little fibs? When it comes to our men, however, it’s best to be a straight-shooter. After all…would you like it if he faked it for you? Let’s discuss.

He chefs up a big meal for you and… you hate it

Ok, so here’s one occasion where you might be able to get away with a white lie. If you’re in the early stages or are simply dating casually, perhaps you can stumble through that last mouthful, even if he’s no Jamie Oliver. But if you’re a vegan and he’s produced a dazzling, tender 8oz. strip-loin, what good would faking it do? Consider how long you see yourself with your beau before deciding whether to fake your dietary preferences.

He asks about your past

First we hear Jesse James has cheated, and then all kinds of skeletons come flying out of the closet about multiple indiscretions and Nazi fetishes. Safe to say, nothing is more humiliating than having someone else air your dirty laundry. Be straight up with your guy about your past, even if it’s a little wild. He’ll appreciate your honesty. And same goes for if your past is a little more straight-laced. Making up wild stories and exaggerating facts is only likely to get you caught in a lie later.

He buys you a gift and you’d like to return it

Getting a gift from your beau that you’ll never use or wear can be awkward. More often than not, guys are simply clueless as to what women want. If it’s something small that you may be able to get use out of, then maybe just say Thank You and move on. But if it’s a total dud, or even worse an expensive dud, tactfully praise him for his efforts, but be honest about not liking it. Faking that you do will only hurt his feelings more when he never sees you wear it.

He made a joke, but hurt your feelings

We women pride ourselves on the ability to be tough cookies in the workplace, around our families and for our friends in tough times. But in your relationship, you should be able to show your true emotions, even the vulnerable ones. If your partner said something to hurt your feelings, whether a flippant remark or a direct jab, make sure you let him know. Firstly, his reaction will speak volumes about his compassion and patience. Secondly, guys aren’t perceptive. Chances are he didn’t know he upset you, so faking a smile won’t warrant you an apology, or stop it from happening again.

He isn’t satisfying you

This one can be the most tempting because you don’t want to crush his ego. Your partner isn’t satisfying you in bed, so you fake that he is for the obvious reasons. If he finds out you’re faking, it’ll be a massive blow to his ego, but a little feedback may help you get closer to that Golden O. But if you continue to fake, consider that you’re cutting off your nose to spite your face. Who really benefits if you fake your sexual preferences and feelings? He may not know, but you will.

This is a GREAT post! I used to date a guy who LOVED video games. I liked him so fibbed a little that I also liked playing. Well, that’s ALL we ended up doing all the time. I grew to resent him and finally snapped one day. His reaction was “I thought you loved playing” and mine was “Are you CRAZY! It’s so boring”. The argument could have been avoided if I was just honest i the beginning.
