Ayo Edebiri paid homage to Julia Roberts when she walked the red carpet at the 2025 Golden Globes in Los Angeles on Sunday night. The Bear star wore an oversized baggy grey suit from Loewe, a nod to Roberts’s iconic baggy Armani look that she wore to the ceremony back in 1990.
Edebiri’s custom Loewe outfit featured an oversized grey suit jacket with structured shoulders, matching loose-fitting pants, a grey shirt and a pair of black loafers. She brought some shine to her monochromatic look by adding a long gold feather tie. The actress accessorized her minimal look with Mejuri hoop earrings and silver grills and a red heart-in-hand badge worn on the lapel of her jacket.
Of course the similarities to Robert’s outfit that she wore at the 1990 Golden Globes, where she won best supporting actress for her role in Steel Magnolias, was intentional.
Edebiri’s stylist Danielle Goldberg reposted a side-by-side photo on her Instagram Stories of Edebiri in her Golden Globes look next to Roberts wearing an almost identical oversized Armani suit paired with a white shirt and printed tie at the 1990 Golden Globes as she shared the inspiration behind the outfit.
“Important,” she wrote over the photo, tagging both actresses.
Edebiri’s style tribute to Roberts at the Globes has even more significance after she recently completed a project with the Pretty Woman star. Edebiri and Roberts wrapped up filming for the upcoming thriller After the Hunt in August 2024.
As for Roberts original Armani ensemble? It’s one of her all-time favourites.
Roberts purchased the men’s Armani suit from the designer’s fabled Rodeo Drive boutique and then had it tailored in-store. “This was one of my all-time favourite outfits,” the Oscar winner reflects in her Life in Looks video for Vogue. “I did my hair, my girlfriend did my make-up… I don’t even know that people wore really fancy gowns to the Golden Globes then the way they do now, but I thought that I was very extra in this outfit. I could not have known that it was going to become this, like, statement outfit. I just thought I looked fabulous, and I still have that suit.”
