I have to admit something: I’ve been so swept up with the upcoming release of Big Little Lies that I somehow managed to miss the news of Drew Barrymore starring in the Netflix dark comedy Santa Clarita Diet, and, for that, I’m eternally sorry.
In Santa Clarita Diet, streaming as of February 3 on Netflix (thankfully, the day after I get internet installed in my new digs — otherwise we would have had a serious problem on our hands), Drew Barrymore plays Sheila Hammond who, along with her husband Joel (played by Timothy Olyphant, who you might remember from Scream 2, Deadwood and Catch and Release), is a somewhat discontented real estate agent in a L.A. suburb. Seems like something we’ve seen before, right? Just wait.
One day Joel notices that Sheila is… different, only to realize that somehow she died and is basically now a zombie. Like a raw meat and human ear-eating zombie. Very unusual for those L.A. folk.
To help control her urges Joel and Sheila start killing (but only bad guys, duh — like Dexter) and, as a result, Sheila starts living (heh) her best life (heheh) by needing only two hours of sleep a night (I wish) and being able to parallel park on the first try (never in my life). If that entire premise sounds silly to you, that’s because it really is. But when you watch the trailer, you realize that it makes for the comedy we really and truly need in our lives right now.
So, yeah, we’re pretty stoked about this show and will definitely be streaming all 13 episodes that weekend. Just try and stop us.
