With every runway season, there’s always standout beauty trends that are a definite dos, and some that are definite don’ts. Here goes:
Hair
Do: Go bigger. There was lots of 70s influence with big brushed out curls, which is good news for when the heat rises since a bit of frizz is definitely in. And on the flip side of that, updos were sleek and simple, like a low chignon, which is also a great low-maintenance look. I mean, the last thing you want to do in the sticky heat is pull out a heat-styling tool, right?
Don’t: While designer Alexander Wang has a cult following for his laid-back, grungy, downtown-cool apparel, unfortunately the models’ tresses, complete with thick streaks of white paint coating hair, is not a look to emulate.
Eyes
Do: Bold, bright, punchy hues in a myriad of colours are the top makeup trends for S/S 2011. I love, love, love the soft, smoky eye from Oscar de la Renta that was applied using a bluish-grey shadow. Just remember to keep the rest of your makeup minimal should you try the eye-popping trend.
Don’t: We’re fans of this season’s neon shadow trend, but just stick to one shade of neon on lids. Don’t go overboard with a trio of neon on lids, like we saw at some shows.
Nails
Do: The new IT nails to sport this season is the half-moon manicure that first appeared on the Vena Cava runway. Also touted as the new hot shade, is Riva by Chanel, which debuted during the label’s 2011 Resort fashion show. The colour is an icy robin’s egg blue with flecks of shimmer”imitations will undoubtedly abound this spring.
Don’t: Pointed or ˜stiletto’ nails a la Fergie, Lady Gaga and Rihanna. While I must admit the talon-esque look works on these fashion-forward celebs, there is something that tells me that sporting claw-like weapons on your hands will probably not fly in the real world.
