Unhealthy Relationship Habits to Kick Now

Things are steady with your guy, but you’re feeling more irritated than infatuated lately. Before you cue up your breakup playlist, take a look at the time you spend together. We all fall into routines after a while, but some seemingly harmless habits can create cracks in your relationship where there shouldn’t be any. If your relationship’s leaning more toward rough tide than smooth sailing, your couple customs may be to blame.

Keep it clean
Disagreements are good, so long as you fight fair. Avoid name-calling during an argument. It’s unnecessary, and just plain hurtful. Plus, it can escalate to more personal insults if you justify it with your anger. Try to make it about how you feel and what you can do, instead of pointing out what he’s doing wrong “ otherwise it’ll feel like an attack.

Don’t gossip to family or friends mid-fight. It’s a one-sided story, so there’s a good chance it’ll come out sounding negative. It isn’t fair to your SO, and can leave your pals with a less-than-kind impression that could stick even after the issue’s been resolved.

Most importantly, be open to compromise. If you find yourself having the same fight over and over, see if you can’t budge an inch more to nix the problem once and for all. But a good compromise is something that you can both live with, so don’t submit to constantly being in the give position with little take in return.

Digging for what?
Overanalyzing or rehashing past conflicts is the deadliest of harmless relationship sins. It creates unneeded stress in your life, and nothing more. If you’re constantly suspicious of your BF, it’ll not only seem like you don’t trust him, but that could end up becoming your reality. Trusting your partner is paramount, so unless he’s given you a reason to be wary, let that cryptic text go.

Be smart about sex
Monogamy does not grant you immunity from STDs, and it definitely doesn’t prevent pregnancy. Some STDs can flare up years after they’ve been contracted (herpes, for example). So even if you’ve been with your partner for a long time, keep using birth control “ ideally condoms and another method, like The Pill for extra protection. One scare is all it takes to develop unnecessary stress, and it’s such an easy fix.

Too much of a good thing
Sometimes after a long week nothing sounds more heavenly than a quiet couple’s night in with takeout and a movie. But too many of these antisocial dates can create resentment when you are each other’s only social connection. Besides that, it’s good to have a little mystery. Sharing new experiences deepens your bond and will help keep the spark alive.

It’s as if people have completely separated the act of sex from the act of making babies. They think sex is just about pleasure. They think that having a relationship is just about socializing with the opposite gender. They don’t seem to think having a relationship with the opposite gender as having anything to do with making babies.

Well, you don’t need birth control if you’re chaste, now do you?
