Disney+ and Hulu have finally unveiled the trailer for Becoming Karl Lagerfeld, the highly anticipated original series starring Daniel Brühl as a young version of German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died at age 85 in 2019. Adapted from the novel Kaiser Karl by Raphaëlle Bacqué, the six-part series chronicles the rise of the iconic fashion designer through the world of 1970s Parisian high fashion.
Lagerfeld was one of the more memorable larger-than-life figures in fashion with his trademark look of white mane, ponytail, black gloves and dark sunglasses, so it’s fitting that he is finally getting the biopic treatment, or rather, origin story treatment with Becoming Karl Lagerfeld.
The lushly lensed series opens in 1972, when a 38-year-old Lagerfeld was an unknown ready-to-wear designer. He falls in love with a sultry dandy, Jacques de Bascher (Théodore Pellerin), who inspires him to challenge himself and act on his ambition to become the world’s most famous French fashion designer. He faces off Yves Saint Laurent (Arnaud Valois), who reigned supreme with the backing of Pierre Bergé (Alex Lutz), and subsequently becomes the head designer and creative director of Chanel, Fendi and his own label.
Taking place across Paris, Monaco and Rome, the series also depicts the clan rivalries and ego battles of the high-fashion world, as well as the epic partying and decadence, Lagerfeld’s tumultuous love affair with de Bascher and his friendships.
“Becoming Karl Lagerfeld plunges us into the heart of the 70s, in Paris, Monaco, and Rome, to follow the formidable blossoming of this complex and iconic personality of Parisian couture,” an official description reads. You can watch the official trailer for Becoming Karl Lagerfeld below:
Becoming Karl Lagerfeld also highlights some of the biggest stars of the era, including Marlene Dietrich (Sunnyi Melles), Paloma Picasso (Jeanne Damas), Loulou de la Falaise (Claire Laffut), and Andy Warhol (Paul Spera). German actress Lisa Kreuzer stars as Karl’s mother, Elisabeth Lagerfeld.
Directors of the series include Jéröme Salle (episodes 1-2-6) and Audrey Estrougo (episodes 3-4-5).
Becoming Karl had its world premiere at Canneseries, where it received a standing ovation and warm reviews. Becoming Karl Lagerfeld will be available to stream on Hulu, and Disney+ on June 7, 2024.
