In the beginning

Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the brains behind Gilmore Girls, the series follows a 1950s Jewish housewife, Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan), who lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Marvelous! While bathing in a pool of idyllic luxury, her world is turned upside down when her husband admits to cheating on her with his secretary. In a drunken spur Midge heads to The Gaslight Café, a local comedy bar, and unintentionally delivers a rather entertaining set about her current misfortunes. However, while retelling, she begins to undress at which point she’s arrested and meets up with a pre-famous comedian, Lenny Bruce. She bails him out and Bruce tells her that the business is a difficult one but Maisel is determined to conquer it.

#WINNING

The series premiered in November 2017,and was met with an overwhelmingly warm reception. It was ranked 94% onRotten Tomatoes, is rate 8.7/10 on iMDB and with its debut on Amazon Prime Video, was the most successful in the platform’s history.

It subsequently won two Golden Globes Awards (Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for Brosnahan) and eight Primetime Emmy Awards (including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Brosnahan). Talk about making lemonade out of lemons, amirite?

One laugh at a time

Brosnahan, who is widely-known for her role on House of Cards, stepped into the role with a little bit of uncertainty for comedy, as she revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair. She shared, “As I got up onstage to perform that scene,” she says, “I realized that it was also bigger than anything that I was used to.” But it would be absolutely impossible to tell as the actress has won the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Primetime Emmy.

What to expect?

In a recent interview on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show, Brosnahan gave viewers a tease of the highly anticipated second season. The artist told Fallon, “In season two we find her sitting on this giant secret. Nobody knows that she’s trying this thing that she’s got no business doing, as far as anyone else is concerned, and season two kind of follows the “ripple effect” oh how that effects everyone around her.”
