Beyoncé©: “I feel it’s vital that we learn from the past and recognize our tendencies to repeat our mistakes.”
The history books will remember Beyoncé©’s 2017 Grammys forever–at one point, she sings while lying flat on her back, and of course, she teared visibly when Adele tried to refuse the Record of the Year accolade–but for someone who’s usually only political through her music, Beyoncé© was encouragingly vocal about her concerns in her own acceptance speech. After Lemonade snatched the trophy for Best Urban Contemporary Album, Queen B herself read out a prepared speech that many saw as a subtle rallying cry around her own identity. “It’s important to me to show images to my children that reflect their beauty so they can grow up in a world where they look in the mirror ” first through their own families, as well as the news, the Super Bowl, the Olympics, the White House and the Grammys ” and see themselves,” Bey confessed. “This is something I want for every child of every race.” Amen, sister: watch the speech for yourself, and you’ll have no doubts that Beyoncé©’s going to stay proud of her roots no matter the political climate.
