Hair chalk has been around for a while now but this season, more and more beauty retailers are releasing easy DIY kits. Before you get into a hair chalking frenzy, read on to find out what you need to know before you chalk and how to protect your hair while doing it.
Hair Chalk is Safe
Yes, hair chalk is a safe alternative to dying your locks permanently. It can give you funky colour and a fabulous look for a special event and not only is it super affordable, but it won’t harm your hair the way dyes and bleach will.
But…It Can Dry Your Locks
While it is safe to use, we don’t recommend getting into a daily hair chalk obsession. While it isn’t as damaging as a permanent dye, it does suck some moisture out of your hair, making it slightly more fragile. It’s really important to keep hair chalking to a minimum and not get too carried away.
You Must Hydrate Your Hair Before and After Chalking
Don’t forget to use ample conditioner both before and after using hair chalk. This will help preserve as much moisture as possible in the hair, preventing it from drying out too much. Once you shampoo the product out, you will want to hydrate it again with conditioner to make sure it recovers from the product without suffering.
Remember Less is More
We’re all for funky-coloured locks but trust us, nothing kills a trend like overuse of it. There is no need to try every colour at once or dye several pieces of hair at a time. One or two strands of hair, preferably only one colour at a time, is the way to go. Because the colour can stand out so much, always remember that less is more.
Wear Latex Gloves When Applying
Somehow, hair chalk always ends up on your fingernails and hands. Remember that it usually only washes out of your hair after a few shampoos, so it can require lots of scrubbing to scrape it off your hands and nails. Prevent a big time mess by slapping on a pair of disposable gloves first.
Brush Your Chalked Hair
Once you have chalked a strand of hair, rub it with a piece of paper towel until the colour stops rubbing off. Then brush it a few times, until it feels smooth. This will get the excess colour off and prevent it from transferring onto your clothing. Once you do this, however, you should be good to go without worrying about damaging any of your clothes.
I’m looking for dark brown and black.
I tried the last thing and it did not work…Perhaps try mixing it with food coloring and crush Up the chalk add conditioner apply it and you’re all set.
