Best Disease-Fighting Foods

We’re all guilty of it: you stop into your local grocery store on the way home from work and grab enough of the same old standbys to carry you over for one more week, often sacrificing health for convenience. It’s common to get stuck in routine eating habits, but it’s important to stay up-to-date on the latest foods making waves for their health benefits. Read on to learn how these good-for-you options can reduce the risk of cancer and simple ways to use them when cooking.

Flaxseed
Research on the potency of flaxseed as an anti-cancer food is still underway, but ground flax and flax oil contains phytoestrogens believed to reduce the risk of breast, skin, and lung cancer. Stir a couple tablespoons of ground flax seeds into your morning smoothie.

Pineapple
Sure it’s a little expensive, but pineapple is a good source of vitamin C. In addition, it contains the enzyme bromelain, which may protect against breast and lung cancer. Buy one that needs to be cleaned at home you’ll find they’re cheaper than their precut and cleaned counterpart.

Chili peppers and jalapenos
Now you’ve got the perfect excuse to call up all your gal pals for a serious Mexican fiesta! These fiery little guys contain the chemical capsaicin, which may neutralize certain cancer-causing substances (nitrosamines) and help prevent stomach cancer. 

Kale (and other cruciferous veggies)
This leafy green is full of the phytochemicals called isothiocyanates, which are thought to suppress tumor growth and block cancer-causing substances from reaching their targets. Bake up a batch of crispy kale chips or stir a bunch into homemade vegetable soup.

Green and Black Teas
Next time you grab that bag of coffee, think twice. These teas contain antioxidants known as polyphenols (catechins) that can prevent cancer cells from dividing. Still need your morning java fix? Opt for a cup of green tea mid-afternoon instead of just another glass of water.

Seaweed
It contains beta-carotene, protein, vitamin B12, fiber, and chlorophyll, as well as chlorophylones – fatty acids that can help in the fight against breast cancer. Even we don’t really cook with this one “ but there’s no harm in ordering a seaweed salad the next time you’re out for sushi.
