Is there any genre as all-out satisfying as the makeover movie? Whether it’s for revenge on an ex or to impersonate a high society gal, few of us can resist a tale of ugly duckling-turned-swan.
Grab some popcorn and relate (or not) to these leading ladies as they get made over, Hollywood style.
Clueless (1995)
This is the movie that taught us to never trust mirrors (Polaroids only!), and that sometimes it’s ok to love your stepbrother. Brittany Murphy plays Tai, the new girl at Bronson Alcott High School. When the two most popular girls there take it upon themselves to give her a beauty and style overhaul, hilarity and heartbreak ensue.
Pretty Woman (1990)
From walking the streets to shopping on the street (ahem”Rodeo Drive), Julia Roberts is the perfect call girl-turned-classy in this go-to makeover movie. This film taught snotty shopkeepers everywhere that to turn down someone because they don’t look the part is a big mistake”huge.
Grease (1978)
Summer lovin’ happened so fast. Summer lovin’ had me a blast. It’s promptly followed by back-to-school heartbreak, which results in main character Sandy trading modest ’50s blouses and poodle skirts for skin-tight leather, hot rollers and nicotine (not to mention killer heels). Olivia Newton-John plays the innocent-turned-rebel in this classic flick.
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Girl in Gap sweater meets the fashion (and beauty) closets at Runway Magazine (read: Vogue). Sexy knee-high Prada boots, serious bangs and red lipstick follow. Anne Hathaway plays the smart journalism grad who is clueless when it comes to fashion, but learns that she can have brains and beauty (with the help of a fabulously fashionable art director).
My Fair Lady (1964)
In an attempt to prove his status as a top-notch phonetics professor, a man makes a bet with his acquaintance that he can transform a cockney flower seller’s accent into an aristocratic one, and pass her off as a lady of high society. Audrey Hepburn plays the iconic Eliza Doolittle, who goes from shabby to refined in both accent and accessories (including a fabulous ball gown and tiara).
