Feeling nostalgic? Good, because one of the most recognizable fashion brands of the ’80s and ’90s has officially returned to Canada.
Esprit is once again available across the country through an exclusive collection at Walmart Canada, bringing the once-prominent mall brand back to Canadian shoppers more than a decade after its North American stores shuttered.
For anyone who grew up in the ’80s or ’90s, the name Esprit likely conjures up memories of brightly coloured sweatshirts, striped knits, oversized denim, graphic tees and the brand’s unmistakable block-letter logo. At its peak, Esprit wasn’t simply another label hanging on the racks at the mall; it helped define the casual, colourful aesthetic of an entire era.
Now, Walmart is betting that a combination of nostalgia and the ongoing revival of ’90s style makes this the perfect time for an Esprit comeback.
“Esprit holds a special place in the hearts of many Canadians, so it’s especially meaningful to bring this iconic brand back to Canada – exclusively at Walmart,” said Marlise Wilson, senior director of womenswear at Walmart Canada.
“Esprit’s bright, optimistic spirit defined an era for so many of us, and I’m thrilled to bring that same sense of joy, colour and self-expression to both longtime fans and a new generation of customers.”
The initial collection includes knitwear, denim, layering pieces and everyday basics in sizes XS to XXL. It’s available at select Walmart Canada stores, as well as online through Walmart.ca and the Walmart app.
The timing makes sense. Over the past several years, fashion has been mining the recent past for inspiration, with everything from baggy denim and baby tees to preppy knits, cargo pants and other ’90s staples finding their way back into wardrobes. At the same time, a growing number of heritage brands have discovered that nostalgia can be a powerful way to reconnect with shoppers who remember them the first time around.
“For many Canadians, the brand represents a defining era in fashion, one rooted in quality, individuality and casual confidence,” Walmart said in announcing the launch.
“Through a collaboration with Centric Brands, Esprit is once again available to Canadian consumers, marking an exciting new chapter for the beloved heritage brand.”
The rise of Esprit
Esprit’s history stretches back much further than the ’90s mall era. The company was founded in San Francisco in 1968 by Susie and Doug Tompkins, who initially sold clothing from the back of a station wagon. Doug Tompkins had also co-founded The North Face several years earlier.
By the late 1970s and ’80s, Esprit had developed an identity that was almost impossible to mistake. Its clothes were casual, youthful and colourful, while its advertising and stores embraced bold graphics and an equally playful visual language. The brand’s famous stencil-like logo, designed by legendary graphic designer John Casado in 1979, became an instantly recognizable part of its identity.
Esprit’s advertising was particularly influential. Rather than relying exclusively on the polished fashion imagery typical of the era, the company became known for campaigns that celebrated individuality, diversity and personality. Its colourful catalogues, shopping bags and store interiors were as much a part of the Esprit universe as the clothes themselves.
By the 1980s and early ’90s, Esprit had become an international fashion powerhouse, and its logo-emblazoned sweatshirts, sweaters, T-shirts and accessories were ubiquitous. In Canada, its stores became a familiar fixture of the mall landscape alongside many of the other brands that defined shopping culture before online retail transformed the industry.
But Esprit’s fortunes eventually changed. After years of declining sales and increasing competition, the company announced in 2011 that it would exit the North American retail market, closing its stores in Canada and the United States. For Canadian shoppers who had grown up with the brand, Esprit largely disappeared from everyday fashion consciousness.
So, why bring Esprit back now?
Fashion’s obsession with the ’90s has turned the era’s once-everyday wardrobe staples into coveted pieces again. Vintage Esprit sweatshirts and logo pieces regularly resurface on resale platforms, while younger shoppers have embraced many of the relaxed silhouettes and colourful basics that originally made the brand popular.
Walmart is positioning the new collection to capitalize on that renewed interest while introducing Esprit to consumers who may have no memories of its original heyday.
For Gen X and millennial shoppers, seeing the Esprit logo again offers an immediate hit of nostalgia. For Gen Z, however, the appeal may be completely different: Esprit’s colourful, casual aesthetic fits comfortably alongside the vintage-inspired fashion currently dominating social media and retail.
It also reflects a larger trend of once-ubiquitous brands finding new ways to re-enter the market without necessarily rebuilding the sprawling retail networks they once operated. Rather than reopening Esprit stores across Canadian malls, the Walmart partnership instantly gives the label access to shoppers across the country both in stores and online.
Whether the comeback ultimately inspires Canadians to fall in love with Esprit all over again remains to be seen. But for anyone who remembers when an Esprit sweatshirt was practically a mall-era status symbol, spotting that familiar logo on a clothing rack again may be enough to trigger some serious nostalgia.
The new Esprit collection is available now at select Walmart Canada stores, on Walmart.ca and through the Walmart app.
