Everything You Need To Know About Netflix’s ‘Little House on the Prairie’

Netflix’s highly anticipated adaptation of Little House on the Prairie is set to premiere this summer, and in a strong vote of confidence, the streamer has already renewed the series for a second season ahead of its debut.

The latest iteration of Little House arrives over 40 years after the original Little House on the Prairie series wrapped in 1983.

“I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive,” showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine said in a release. “We can’t wait to share this new adaptation of the Little House books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is giving us the opportunity to continue the story.”

Based on the classic children’s literature series Little House by Laura Ingalls Wilder (1932–1943), the upcoming Netflix series reimagines the nearly 100-year-old novels about growing up in the American West in the 1800s. Since the first book was published in the 1930s, the Little House series has sold more than 73 million copies worldwide and has been translated into at least 27 languages. The 1974 show endures in pop culture, garnering 13.25 billion minutes of viewing in 2024 alone. (But, more on that later!)

In the show’s ninth and final season, following Michael Landon’s departure, the title changed to Little House: A New Beginning. The television series ended on March 21, 1983, but three post-series movies were made: Little House: Look Back to Yesterday (1983), Little House: The Last Farewell (1984), and Little House: Bless All the Dear Children (1984).
