Well here’s some news for your Wednesday morning: Alexandra Shulman is stepping down as British Vogue‘s EIC after 25 years in the position. The change will be effective as of the summer.
“Although I have had months to acclimatize to the idea of leaving Vogue, it hasn’t made the moment of announcing it any less sad,” she said this morning. “I have been incredibly privileged to have been able to look after such a great magazine for so long and even more to have worked with so many people over those years who have made the experience so interesting and rich.”
“It was difficult to decide to leave but 25 years is a very long time and I am tremendously excited that I will now look forward into a different future,” Shulman added. “But I know nothing will be quite like the years I have spent at Vogue. Nicholas Coleridge and Jonathan Newhouse have given me the space to edit this important magazine in exactly the way I wanted to and for that, and of course the opportunity in the first place I am tremendously grateful.”
But you can also be grateful if you can’t handle this news: Shulman also announced that she will be at the magazine for several months, overlooking upcoming issues and “new initiatives for this magazine that I love.”
Which is great, because Shulman’s absence will obviously be felt. Nicholas Coleridge, managing director of Conde Naste Britain, added that the EIC was responsible for ushering in the era of global digitization for the brand, as well as overseeing the magazine’s period of highest ever circulation.
So who’ll take her place? Vogue UK assures that the announcement is coming, but it’ll be interesting to see who’s deemed a worthy successor in the wake of one woman’s quarter-century legacy. The bets are on!
