With flu season upon us, we want to do everything we can to prevent getting sick. We all know that vitamin C and D are important in protecting against the flu, but there’s more we can do. Turmeric latte, anyone?
That’s right, staying healthy this winter is as easy as making your own turmeric latte. Gaining popularity throughout cafes in Europe, the turmeric latte otherwise known as golden milk is a delicious way to keep your immune system thriving this winter.
If you’re thinking that turmeric is more for cooking than sipping, think again! Turmeric contains compounds called curcuminoids, most commonly known as curcumin, which is the active ingredient in turmeric. Not only does it have a powerful anti-inflammatory effect but it’s also an antioxidant. This miracle spice also increases brain function, can lower rates of depression, lower risk of cancer, help to prevent heart disease and even has shown positive effects on Alzheimer’s disease. It’s even recommended to take when eating fatty foods, as it helps to dissolve fat faster. Turmeric supports healthy overall immune function, so no matter what you take turmeric for, it’s a win-win. The best part is that you can easily make this delicious turmeric latte at home.
You’ll need:
2 cups of unsweetened almond, soy, hemp or coconut milk
1 teaspoon of turmeric
1 teaspoon of agave, honey or coconut syrup
1 cinnamon stick or ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1 pinch of fresh or ground ginger
To make it:
Warm the milk on medium heat in small saucepan. Mix in your syrup, ground cinnamon or cinnamon stick and ginger and let warm for three minutes or until it’s your desired temperature. Pour through a strainer into your favorite mug and serve!
You can drink this everyday or as needed. You can change it up and mix up some coconut oil in when warming the milk for a creamier latte. Try using a milk frother if you’re feeling fancy or sprinkling some cinnamon on top for some decorative flare.
As much as turmeric is a great spice to have, remember that getting enough sleep, washing your hands and eating healthy also plays an important role in staying healthy this winter. Drink up!
