Sweater Weather: This Season’s Hottest Looks

Finally, the season of fall is upon us and we no longer need to outfit ourselves with only not sweating too much in mind.  Cool temperatures, falling leaves and pumpkin spice lattes are just some of the benefits to the season of jackets, boots and New York Fashion Week, but like most of us living in the Great White North, autumn is good for yet another reason: sweaters. That’s why we’ve assembled a list of the go-to sweater fashions for this fall and which ones will work best on you.  Sweater weather can now be celebrated.

Oversize
Nothing says cozy like an oversize sweater and leggings, so it goes without saying that whether it’s a button-up or a sweater-dress, anything roomy is easy and adaptable. Or even a “Bill Cosby” type of sweater, like Whitney Port is rocking above. For casual outings, head to Urban Outfitters or your favourite vintage shop for an oversized look that, paired with jeggings, work socks and ankle boots, will make for the perfect counterpart to teas, friends and even more sweater shopping.

To fully maximize the jeggings trend, head to H&M or Aerie for a solid-toned 90s-inspired look.  With your bottoms balancing out your sweater’s spacious top, you’ll take advantage of the season’s hottest trend while being both practical and warm.

Cardigans
When jackets are a little much and a t-shirt’s simply too optimistic, a cardigan is the perfect solution.  That’s why nearly every designer, chain or thrift shop knows the necessity of such an item, and unlike wrap sweaters, capes or all things cropped, an old-fashioned cardigan is tried, true and trend-free.

To dress up business casual, opt for a solid knit from H & M or the Gap that will add something a little more to the standard skirt and blouse combination.  Joe Fresh and Old Navy also boast adaptable cardigans at an affordable price, and worn overtop a dress and tights or jeans and a v-neck, you’ll transition effortlessly from day to night.

The Statement
There’s a reason thrifting’s always in style, and that’s because the novelty sweater is one that is gutsy and timeless.  In the spirit of Blanche Devereaux (of Golden Girls), a piece adorned with lace, feathers or metallics may seem a little too loud, but paired with skinny jeans or shorts and tights, its eye-catching qualities will compliment your neutral bottoms.

But if vintage isn’t up your alley, fear not: stores like H & M and Urban Outfitters have countless pieces that vary from cape-like to retro chic, so until you can begin wearing your statement coat, your single layer will easily suffice.

Form-fitting
Cardigans aside, there’s one sweater style that’s remained en vogue for generations, and that’s the iconic form-fitting staple piece that works perfectly alongside skirts, pants or even shorts.  Stores like Banana Republic, Gap and Club Monaco are the ideal go-to for solid-toned, well-fitting cashmere, and whether v-neck or turtleneck, their classic shape will prevent you from looking dated “ ever.

Since neutrals return each fall, a 60s-inspired short-sleeved cashmere piece will work perfectly alongside a knee-length grey pencil skirt, or if you’re hoping to channel Joan Holloway, opt for a plum-toned sweater dress accessorized with a belt.  After all, you may feel Mad Men but your clothes will scream modern.
