Kitchen Cupboard Beauty

What you already have in your fridge and pantry is likely better for your skin than anything you can buy at the department store beauty counter. Give some of these kitchen cupboard beauty products a try and see a change in your skin.

Asprin masks
You’ll never look at an asprin the same way again. Any brand of acetylsalicylic acid will change the way you deal with your blemishes. Take an asprin tablet, crush it into a fine powder, and mix with a few drops of water. Applying this to a zit will decrease the swelling, and speed up healing. A great target treatment, it clears the pimple without drying out surrounding skin.

Honey and oats
Great for all skin types, mixing honey (naturally antibacterial!) with soothing and moisturising oatmeal makes for a great weekly treatment. Half a cup of oatmeal with two tablespoons of honey and 20 minutes on the face is all it takes to see a different, brighter complexion. One cup natural yogurt mixed with the oatmeal is great for sensitive or irritated skin.

Bananas for clear complexion
One ripe banana, two tablespoons of natural yogurt, and a few drops of lemon juice. Mash the banana, mix in the yogurt, then the lemon juice. Apply to the face for 15-20 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water. Apply this treatment 1-2 times a week and you should notice a decrease in the amount of breakouts you get, and a more even complexion.

An ode to olive oil
Wander into a higher-end food shop and splurge on a nice bottle of gourmet olive oil. When you’re not cooking with it, slather it on your skin! Olive oil is one of the richest moisturisers you’ll ever get your hands on, and one of the cheapest for quality. Use it on your body when you get out of the shower, or your face before you go to bed. Olive oil also makes a great facial cleanser. After removing makeup, massage a tablespoon of olive oil into the skin, in a circular motion, while running the hot tap. When the water is steaming, run a washcloth under it. Make sure the washcloth is hot enough to steam your skin, but not burn it. Once you have the desired temperature, place the washcloth over your face leaving it there for 20 seconds. Remove the towel, gently wiping the face as you do to remove some oil. Steam your face 2-3 times until your face is moisturized, refreshed, but not greasy.
