Some people simply wash their face with soap and water, and others have extensive seven-step skin care regimens that make you wonder how they ever get anything done. And then, there's the very appealing and time-saving idea of cleansing with micellar water. While this product may sound like a fancy new beauty product, it's actually pretty simple”not to mention it's been around for over a hundred years!
Micellar water is made up of micelles (tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules) suspended in soft water. Micelles are attracted to dirt and oil, so they are able to draw out impurities without drying out the skin, making micellar water the triple threat of the skincare world: facial wash, makeup remover and moisturizer all in one.
The suspension formulation is stable and effective. Micelles are a suspension of oil in water, says Dr. Sonam Yadav, cosmetic dermatologist. The technology first came to be used in France in the early 20th century where the water available was too harsh and would damage skin. The oil content has an affinity for dust and grime, thus binds it and leaves skin cleaner but not dried out.
I have combination skin, and I've been using the L'Oré©al micellar water for about two weeks now, without any other skincare products (aside from my moisturizer). I have to say that it's been very nice to uncomplicated my skin care routine. While I did indulge in a face mask”because #treatyoself”I love that with a few swipes of a cotton ball, I am good to go!
Curious yet? Here are some brands hopping on the micellar bandwagon that you should try.
