Create Lucy Liu’s “Perfectly Imperfect” Braids

Lucy Liu is not your typical, run-of-the-mill actress. As one of the highest profile Asian-American actresses in the industry, Liu definitely stands out. Her unique beauty has been honored countless times on People’s most beautiful list. Even Liu’s career choices have been off the beaten track; her roles have run the gamut from an icy lawyer on the TV series Ally McBeal to a Tokyo crime leader who gets her ass kicked by Uma Thurman in Quentin Tarantino’s cult film Kill Bill. Currently, she stars as Watson- which is typically a male role-on the American TV version of Sherlock Holmes, Elementary.

Since Liu stands out naturally, it would seem to make sense that Liu would rock the boat fashion-wise too. That was evident at this past Golden Globes award ceremony, when Liu wowed the red-carpet crowds with her unconventional choice of perfectly imperfect hair, styled by Wella Professionals. It was a bold choice, as it was quite different from conventional styles that are seen at awards shows.

If you love this wispy fishtail braid, you will be pleased to know that it is very DIY,  and perfect when you suffer from bed head or just want to look tré¨s chic. It can be worn for just about any occasion, to boot. Here is a step- by-step breakdown to create your own perfectly imperfect tresses:

Step1: Don’t wash your hair for 1-2 days

You need dry unwashed hair because it makes the hair easier to grip and gives it the appropriate texture.

Step 2: Use a Style Primer

Apply a style primer, like Wella Professional Velvet Amplifier Style Primer, to prepare hair for styling.

Step 3: Apply Beach Texture Styling Hairspray

To give a texture to the root and the length of the hair, a hairspray should be used.  Beach Texture Hairspray was applied to create texture at the root and length of hair. Wella Styling Professional ¨Andy Lecompte used Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Hairspray.

Step 4: Make a Part and Two French braids

Make a deep side part in your hair and make a french braid on each side of the head, merging the two braids at the bottom, slightly to the side so the braid hangs over the shoulder.

Step 5: Weave the braids’ ends together

Placing one braid over the other, flip the ends through the hole of the two braids

Step 6: Merge the Two Braids Together

Weave the two braids into one fishtail at the bottom, and use Wella Professionals Rugged Fix on the ends to give hair a rugged texture.

Step ¨7: Spray with Wella Professionals Stay Essential

To keep the braid in place, spray with Wella Professionals Stay Essential

Tip: Pair the “perfect imperfect” braid with a feminine floral dress, like the Marie Antoinette-inspired dress that Lucy Liu wore at the Golden Globes.
