Chappell Roan is the newest iconic face of MAC VIVA GLAM, and she’s co-created a gorgeous new collection featuring a trio of lip shades Roan says are made for “the girls, the gays, and the theys.”
For Roan, this was a dream partnership allowing her to both give back and get creative with MAC’s beauty team. “VIVA GLAM has always been about more than makeup,” shares the Pink Pony Club singer.” It’s about showing up for communities and making real change. Being able to create these shades and know that every purchase gives back makes this partnership feel incredibly special to me.”
The newest VIVA GLAM collection will give back 100% of the selling price to VIVA GLAM charities advancing sexual, gender, racial, and environmental equality. Since the initiative was introduced in 1994, VIVA Glam has raised more than $545 million USD for charity making it the largest philanthropic initiative in beauty. Roan is the latest in a series of legendary VIVA GALM collaborators which include RuPaul, Dita Von Teese, k.d. lang, and Chloë Sevigny.
“Chappell embodies everything M·A·C stands for,” says Nicola Formichetti, global creative director for MAC Cosmetics. “She is fearless, expressive, and completely in her own lane. She knows exactly who she is and how she wants to show up. VIVA GLAM is about turning that kind of self-expression into real impact, and she does that in a way that feels direct and undeniable.”
For Roan’s VIVA GLAM moment, she wanted to create a statement lip shades because “that is my vibe,” she says. “I wanted the packaging to live in the world of Medieval Art Nouveau. And I wanted to make a lipstick that matched my hair!”
The three products in Roan’s lineup include two lipsticks and one gloss. M·A·CXIMAL Silky Matte VIVA GLAM Lipstick in Unnatural Redhead is a rich cherry red 12-hour long wear formula inspired by Chappell’s fiery hair. VIVA GLAM Lustreglass Sheer-Shine Lipstick in Roan of Arc is a softer shade and finish, a mid-toned plum tone that features a lipstick-meets-balm formula. For the gloss lovers, Roan has you covered with VIVA GLAM Lipglass Air Non-Sticky Glass in Damsel which leans into plummy tones tinged with a twinkly gold shimmer.
Roan also collaborated on the packaging of the goods all, of which feature a bespoke design of a sword-and-heart crest. Famed photographers Inez and Vinoodh shot Roan’s VIVA GLAM campaign. Roan’s makeup artist Andrew Dahling dreamed up the aesthetics.
“There were an excessive number of iterations before we landed on the final looks as it was an incredibly collaborative process with Chappell,” Dahling describes. “We built a multidimensional French Revolution story with archetypal characters inspired by its dark, romantic energy. Once we had that, it was about making it Chappell and turning up her iconic glamour, with the warrior and empress becoming central to the shoot. The key to connecting her visual identity was the use of color and glitters, a sort of modern, surreal Chappell Roan take on this era of makeup and its references.”
