With the popularity of the hit Black Swan, ballerina fashion eventually moved from the local Cineplex to the local shopping centre, leaving us with style choices which are a spellbinding performance indeed. While dance-inspired fashions might bring out memories of childhood ballet lessons for some of you, it’s time to experiment with more grown-up and fashion-forward ballerina looks. So say goodbye to itchy leotards, clingy tutus, and those pink tights you would have never been caught dead in outside of class, and let ballet style make a second impression on you.
Bodysuits
American Apparel was quick to jump on the bodysuit bandwagon two years ago when this eccentric yet oddly appealing trend first began to generate style appeal. Popularized by Lady Gaga, the dancer-style bodysuit also appeared on the runway this season as part of Lanvin’s latest collection. Needless to say, leotards hardly look appropriate on their own outside of the dance studio, so wearing one on the city streets is tricky at best. Try a basic sleeved bodysuit in black paired with opaque tights and a high-waisted skirt, or with skinny denim, pumps, and layered tops. Add a chunky necklace to set off the simple scoop neck of a leotard.

Ballet Flats
This season, ballet flats go from laid-back casual footwear to style statements, complete with metallic finishes, studs, buckles, laces, and funky, electric colours. The classic pointe-style shoe, however, is also predicted to be big. The traditional rubber-soled leather ballet flat with a rounded toe, comfortable and classic fit, and ruched sides is a definite must-have for your shoe collection.

Skirts
Whether it’s a tulle skirt, short tutu, or a sheer, elegant number, ballet skirts are one of the most inspired looks of the moment both in haute couture and in the world of street fashion. Several significant designer labels, such as Marni, showcased ballerina skirts in recent months. For a bit of extra dancer flair, pair your skirt with a leotard, and keep the outfit from becoming costume-like by adding unusual accessories, bright colours, and putting your own spin on the trend.

Soft Pinks
It goes without being said that pink is, well, IN once again. Ballet pink, the pale, feminine hue of tights, pointe shoes, and warm-up skirts, is a great way to participate in the Black Swan fashion statement if you’re not a fan of the garments themselves. Expect to see rosy, delicate pinks making their way onto everything from sleek blouses and ruffled dresses to nail polish and eyeshadows in the months to come.
Add OPI’s Nail Lacquer in I Pink I Love You to your nail polish collection this season, $10.95.
