Jennifer Lawrence turned heads when she walked the Oscar red carpet in Los Angeles on Sunday night wearing a strapless black Dior couture gown with white polka dots all over. The stunning gown from the French fashion house featured a corseted bodice, ample skirt, and a matching shawl, which Lawrence rested on her shoulders. She paired the polka dot look with a gleaming diamond necklace with differently cut stones, large wing-shaped diamond earrings with blue stones at the centre, a diamond tennis bracelet, a diamond ring, and a silver crystal-embellished clutch, also by Dior. For glam, she had her blonde hair in a side-parted wavy style reminiscent of Old Hollywood, plus rosy makeup with a jet black cat eye.
The gown that Lawrence wore was actually the closing look from Dior’s recently presented spring 2024 haute couture collection in Paris in January, and it is the product of meticulous work from the members of the atelier. The dress, look 59, is made of artisanal silk moiré, a technique that involves pressing wet layers of fabric together under heat to produce a telltale rippling effect. The entire process to create the gown took an astounding 1,500 hours of labour.
“When I first saw the dress on the runway I fell in love,” Lawrence told Vogue. “Polka dots are classic and chic.”
Print isn’t terribly common on the Oscars red carpet—stars tend to play it safe for Hollywood’s big night. But Lawrence’s criteria for her outfit is simple: when searching for a look she only needs “something elegant and timeless, that I won’t look back on with shock and dismay.”
Lawrence, who is a longtime Dior ambassador, is not nominated for an Oscar but attended the 96th Academy Awards as a presenter. She previously won Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook and was nominated for Winter’s Bone, Joy, and American Hustle.
