Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo both walked the 2024 Oscar red carpet on Sunday night paying homage to their roles in the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked. Grande paid homage to her character Glinda by wearing a giant pink bubble dress by Giambattista Valli, while Erivo, who plays Elphaba, wore a Louis Vuitton gown in a deep green hue with a matching bolero.
Both Grande and Erivo attended the 96th annual Academy Awards as presenters.
Erivo and Grande co-lead Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, which is set to premiere on November 27, 2024. The musical film adaptation tells the story of how Glinda became the Good Witch of the North and how Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West. The beloved musical debuted on Broadway in 2003 (starring Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda and Idina Menzel as Elphaba) and won three Tony Awards. It is a loose adaptation of the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is in turn based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film adaptation.
Grande’s fairytale-worthy design is the same shade of pale pink as the tiered tulle gown that she wears in the buzzy film. The strapless, fitted dress featured dramatic details such as a long train and sleeves. Grande accessorized the look with a pair of Jimmy Choo’s Romy pumps and jewels from Tiffany & Co. in the same shade of bubblegum pink. Her blond hair — which she dyed back in 2022 for her role as the Good Witch — was worn in a curly updo for the Oscar red carpet.
Erivo wore an emerald green lamb leather Louis Vuitton gown with a matching oversized bolero that featured dramatic ruffles cascading down the back and a short train. While on the red carpet speaking to Laverne Cox, Erivo confirmed that the dress was, in fact, a “little nod to” her role as the Wicked Witch of the West. For the actress, it was all about having a “witchy texture” to it, which is why they chose a “baby soft” leather to fashion the dress out of.
Grande was styled by Mimi Cuttrell, while Erivo was styled by Jason Bolden.
