On Monday May 2, 2022, some of the most fashionable stars came together for the annual fundraising gala for the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibition, In America: An Anthology of Fashion at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
The evening was co-chaired by Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Regina King and Lin-Manuel Miranda, with Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour, Council of Fashion Designers of America chairman Tom Ford and head of Instagram Adam Mosseri continuing their roles as the Met Gala’s honorary co-chairs.
This year’s Met Gala theme was “Guilded Glamour” and it carried a strict white tie dress code. Vogue noted that attendees were asked “to embody the grandeur — and perhaps the dichotomy — of Gilded Age New York.”
New York’s Gilded Age, a period that stretched from 1870 to 1890, was a period of rapid growth – both in terms of financial wealth and architecture. Fashion at that time was also very busy – think fabric, frills, lace and bows!
Thankfully, most stars understood the assignment and arrived in their “Gilded Glamour” best. Here are ten of our faves from the 2022 Met Gala red carpet.
Blake Lively
Blake Lively, who was a co-chair for the star-studded gala with her husband, Ryan Reynolds, wore a custom gown by Atelier Versace. The strapless, coppery pink gown was paired with opera gloves and changed to a blue-green colour as she walked up the stairs.
Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker returned to the Met Gala red carpet wearing a stunning monochrome gown by Christopher John Rogers. Our fave fashionista paired the extravagant gown with a hat by Irish haute couture milliner Philip Treacy.
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian wore the infamous “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” gown that Marilyn Monroe wore 60 years ago to serenade then-President John F. Kennedy. Designed by Jean Louis (based off of a sketch by Bob Mackie), the dress originally cost $1,440 and was reportedly so tight that Monroe had to be sewn into it prior to her Happy Birthday performance for Kennedy on May 19, 1962 at a Madison Square Garden fundraiser, just three months before she died.
Janelle Monáe
Janelle Monáe hit the annual Met Gala wearing a glittering black gown by Ralph Lauren that featured a dramatic silver striped cowl hood. Monáe told host La La Anthony of her look: “Gilded glamour was the theme and we did gilded glamour from the future.”
Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish wore a custom Regency-inspired, upcycled gown by Gucci. The label only used fabrics that already existed to not create any waste.
Jodie Turner-Smith
Jodie Turner-Smith hit the Met Gala red carpet wearing a custom Gucci silver dress that was comprised of a crystal chain bra and a fringed mini-skirt up front but a much longer, layered pink pleated chiffon skirt that trailed behind her.
Gemma Chan
Gemma Chan ensured she stood out from the crowd when she opted to wear a black and silver structural frock by Louis Vuitton.
Alicia Keys
Alicia Keys brought the New York City skyline to the Met Gala red carpet, wearing a Ralph Lauren look complete with a black cape featuring a jeweled design of the iconic city view. “My inspiration is our city. New York City forever. To just be able to have the Empire State here — Ralph Lauren is from New York,” she said of her look.
Hailey Bieber
Hailey Baldwin Bieber walked the Met Gala carpet wearing a feathered duster with a chic, halter-neck slip gown by Saint Laurent. She told Vogue that she was channelling supermodel Jerry Hall on fashion’s biggest night.
Amber Valletta
Amber Valletta definitely understood the assignment for the 2022 Met Gala red carpet. The former supermodel strutted the red carpet wearing vintage gold Azzaro gown that was exquisitely pleated.
