Is it a skirt? Is it a trouser? Nope, they’re culottes. Now if you’re anything like us, you have probably wondered at some point, “What the hell is that, and what do I do with it?” The way we see it, culottes are a lot like kale. Initially, we were totally blindsided when it started anchoring meals at restaurants, but after a while, we were into it. Similarly, culottes seemed like a 16th century nightmare at first glance, but they’ve definitely grown on us. With that said, here are some of our favourite ways to rock spring’s It Pant.
Monochromatic, systematic, ultramatic
No better way to get things rolling than with a Grease pun. Since culottes are cropped, they can cut your legs off at an awkward spot, resulting in more Corgi, less Victoria’s Secret. A great way to solve this problem is going for a monochromatic look that lengthens your legs. We love soft pinks and neutrals.
Supersize it
Do your tired tummy a favour and venture away from the skinny silhouette. This season, it’s all about going big or going home. Whether you’re going for a more tailored look with structured culottes, or for a more flowing pair that’s somewhere between a skirt and pants, make sure you either opt for a crop top or tuck your shirt in to accentuate your waist.
Leather me up
Leather culottes give this trend an unexpected edge. Try coloured leather culottes for an added challenge.
Heel, boy
Heels and culottes go together like Kim Kardashian and selfies. Heels are another solution to the awkward short leg problem that culottes can result in.
Sporty chic
Culottes are quite possibly the most comfortable thing to happen to fashion (we don’t get to say that too often, so we really are relishing this trend). If you have taken a vow to be kind to your feet, pair your culottes with a laid back top and sneakers for a sporty chic look.
