There are some runway trends that seem to make no sense at all. So it’s always refreshing when a runway trend comes along that is so wearable that it translates easily from runway to day-to-day. When the weather gets cold, it can be hard to find the motivation to put together a stylish outfit. Often times we don’t want to leave the house in anything but a cozy sweater. Well we have many designers to thank for making one of the most comfortable and easy to wear outfits into a high fashion trend. Allow me to introduce you to your new go-to outfit for fall 2011; comfy sweaters and pretty skirts.
Who?
Lyn Devon, ADAM, Dries Van Noten, Band of Outsiders, Jenni Kayne, J. Crew have all done versions of this trend. It was seen on many a fall 2011 runway, but there are a few standouts. Tracey Reese (left) went to the extreme and pair the absolute most flowing, full bodied skirt, with the biggest, coziest sweater, creating an elegant yet bohemian look. While Alexander Wang (right) used luxurious fabrics and cut outs to put a unique and sophisticated spin on the trend.
What?
There are so many different ways to wear this look, and change it up day-to-day. Try a cropped sweater with a long wrap skirt “ as seen in the Jenni Kayne collection (left) “ for a more fitted look. Or an oversized turtleneck sweater with a calf length patterned skirt and ankle boots é la Dries Van Noten (right). Cable knit sweaters, crocheted sweaters, and even jersey sweaters are all fair game. And experiment with different lengths, patterns, cuts, and textures of skirts. There are endless possibilities of stylish combinations to be created.
Where?
Because this look is so versatile, there is a version that will work for almost any setting. The styling in the Lyn Devon fall 2011 collection shows how to make this look work for the office with flattering cuts and clean lines. Wear a sheer sweater and a skirt with folding layers like Band of Outsiders when you are walking the dog or buying groceries. Or for a winter party outfit, try blush colours and silken fabrics as seen in Jenni Kayne fall 2011.
When?
When you want to feel casual, or elegant and comfortable yet stylish. Basically any time you want!
Why?
Because you want to look stylish, while feeling comfortable and warm this fall/winter. Because it’s a fun, easy and flattering trend. Because you want an excuse to buy more knitted sweaters. And because Alexander Wang would never steer you wrong.
