6 New Nail Polish Trends for Spring and Summer

Much like fashion trends for spring 2012, nail polishes are taking a turn towards feminine trends. Break away from the dark, metallic and otherwise winter-colours, spring nail polish trends are light and airy. Try things like pastel colours, much like the sorbet trend that ruled the runways, neon colours, and pretty patterns that channel designers like Mary Katrantzou and Marni.

1. Mint and Pistachio
Mints and pistachios are a huge trend for spring, just look at the cover of any magazine. Creamy and very opaque colours are the best way to wear this trend. Pair pretty, pastel greens like pistachio and mint with vintage girly trends, like the art-deco looks, or the peplums that will continue through fall.

2. Tangerine
We’ve mentioned it before, Tangerine Tango, is the It colour this year. Sephora, OPI, and Essie have all launched a version of this bright orange, which pops against any colour you may be wearing. Not to mention that orange always compliments a (hopefully faux-) tan you may be preparing for this spring.

3. Patterns
Mixing patterns was a big trend for Spring/Summer 2012. Instead of donning head-to-toe patterns, inch your way into the trend, starting with your fingers. Florals, polka-dots and stripes are all simple ways to incorporate this trend. If you’re skilled, use a paintbrush or nail-art kit to create the designs yourself. Or if you’re less skilled in the art department, stick-ons can be found at almost any price point.

4. Neons
Another big trend on the runway this season was neon colours. think of the highlighter colours that used to cover your study notes in high school. The sporty looks that hit the runway, and the shelves of your favourite stores, are well complimented by neon pinks, yellows and blues.

5. Nudes
Like last year, mannequin-like hands are back for spring.  Clean, creamy, and simple neutral colours, like beige, pale orange and creamy light pinks that fade into your own skin colour are a big trend. Especially flattering, since the trends on the runway are so colourful, and printed, plain nails do not detract from your outfit.

6. Gradients
Mix a few of these major colour trends together like on the runway of the Jen Kao Spring/Summer collection. Start with a neon or tangerine at the base and have it fade into a neutral or complimentary colour. Or try it vise versa.
