Ah, the lengths we’ll go to for beauty. We’re all pretty used to the run-of-the-mill procedures like breast augmentation and nose jobs, but the world of plastic surgery has opened the door to so many possibilities of how we can shape and mold ourselves into perfection. Maybe we have Heidi Montag to blame, but some of the things we do to our bodies are pretty out there. Here’s a selection of some of the strangest new procedures to marvel at (and probably avoid).
Dimple Creation
File this one under strange…but cute? A small incision is made on the inside of the cheek and an absorbable suture passed through the skin to create the dimple. Scarring that occurs between the skin and the muscle creates a dimple when you smile. It’s a fairly uncomplicated procedure, and one of the only risks is that overscarring leads to you walking around with a permanent dimple, even when you’re frowning.
Earlobe Rejuvenation
Worried that sagging boobs or droopy eyelids make you look old? Those aren’t the only wilting body parts to make you self-conscious about your age. As collagen in your earlobe decreases, along with the elasticity of your skin, pendulous earlobes mark your advancing years. An earlobe lift is performed by removing a small amount of skin and tissue from the earlobe and sewing it up to create a smaller, plumper, perkier lobe. And here you were worrying about crow’s feet.
Cankle Reduction (ankle liposuction)
Cankles, where the ankle leads into the calf with little definition between the two, are one of the latest things women are told to worry about. Those who have them tend to be genetically predisposed to thick ankles, despite careful diet and rigourous exercise. So some turn to cankle reduction — basically liposuction of the ankle. The procedure is complicated due to ankles being more flesh and bone, less skin and fat. Ankles are prone to scarring, there is risk of blood vessel damage, and you have to wear compression stockings for four weeks after the procedure. All for a body part that will spend eight hours a day tucked under a desk.
Calf Augmentation
Don’t think that the relative size difference between your ankle and calf is the only thing you need to obsess over “ what about the difference between calf and thigh size? Calf augmentation uses silicone implants to create a more sculpted calf muscle proportionate to your thighs. And if oversized calves are your problem, doctors in Korea will slim them down by partially resecting “ that is, removing “ the calf muscle. Whoa.
