Burgundy mascara has been a buzzy beauty item for a while, but with the arrival of autumn, now is the perfect time to test drive this emo vibes shade. If you are a devotee of traditional noir mascara, prepare to be surprised by how much you love burgundy mascara. I am a recent convert, and I may never go back to black…let me tell you more.
TikTok has made burgundy mascara a mega beauty star. There are over 80 million posts on the platform of beauty lovers hyping this game changing hue. Softer than black, but richer than brown, burgundy mascara gives lashes a fluttery finish that feels a little dreamy and a lot demure. It will also make your eye colour seriously sparkle. For green and blue eyes, burgundy mascara heightens the saturation of these shades. For darker eye colours, it intensifies the richness and creates a gorgeous glow.
Brown eyed girl Millie Bobbi Brown touted the wonders of burgundy mascara in a recent GRWM for date night video with Vogue. “I like the colour it brings out in my eyes,” she said of her choice lash formula, L’Oréal’s Voluminous Original Mascara in Deep Burgundy. “I don’t like coloring my lashes; I don’t like other people colouring my lashes. But I love what [colours] do for my lashes.”
I have naturally very fair eye lashes so inky black mascara is always my go to because I love the drama. I decided to step out of my comfort zone and give burgundy mascara a whirl—I thought it would be a nice compliment to the bronze garnet-tinged Charlotte Tilbury eye crayon I wear on the daily which really makes my green eyes pop.
I tried Clinique’s limited edition Black Honey High Impact Mascara ($26 at shoppersdrugmart.ca if you can find one) which is a brilliant version of the iconic lip tint reinvented for lashes. This shade had all the impact of black and made my lashes look long and lush. The difference was the obvious kick it gave my green eyes. I am usually a bold lipstick lover, but when I wear burgundy mascara, I go nearly nude with a soft tint on my lips because the eyes have it. I’m hooked and love this new-to-me beauty vibe so much I may permanently retire the traditional little black mascara wand.
