Backstage Beauty at New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week may be all about the clothes, but it is also a moment for makeup. Since NYC kicks off fashion weeks all around the world, it is also our first look at makeup trends for fall. These top designers influence the way we’ll be wearing our eye shadow, lipstick and hair come September.

Here’s a close look at our favourite backstage beauty trends:

Oscar de la Renta

Typically a runway show will have one beauty look so that all the models look similar, to effectively show the cohesiveness of the collection. Oscar de la Renta decided to ditch the tradition and create four unique looks for his show.

Derek Lam

The beauty look Derek Lam and I created for the show is a sophisticated, minimal urban hippie. I placed a highlight of metallic shimmer in the center of the eyelid, to make it appear very flat, like a two-dimensional painting on a canvas.  The saturated stain on the lips is very strong and intense “  a mix of brown, maroon and burgundy, said Tom Pecheux, Esté©e Lauder Creative Makeup Director.

Michael Kors

At the Kors show the models had graphic eyes and glided cheekbones, conveying a strong, sexy and powerful look. A perfect match for the collection!

J. Mendel

The J. Mendel collection reminded me of the rich, saturated tones of fashion photographer Norman Parkinson’s print, says Gucci Westman, Revlon Global Artistic Director.  I wanted to bring out this sophisticated palate by creating a complementary look that is both simple and luxurious.   The copper eyes have a glossy sheen, while the skin remains dewy and flawless.

Phillip Lim

We achieved a sophisticated makeup look this season with really supple skin and a brown toned lip,” says Makeup Artist Francelle Daly. These girls are cool – uptown girls with downtown boyfriends.

Thakoon

“Thakoon’s winter collection is inspired by summer,” said Diane Kendal for NARS Cosmetics. “So it was a combination of rich fabrics with short-sleeved dresses and heavy stoles with dragonflies. We wanted to reflect that in the makeup, so we did a very dark midnight blue shadow, but to get that summer feel we added glitter on top. It created the perfect juxtaposition between winter and summer.”
