Hudson’s Bay stores across Canada will begin liquidating most of its stores as of Monday, March 24, 2025. Canada’s oldest company will be closing a total of 73 stores nation-wide over the coming months, with six stores in Ontario and Quebec currently set to survive post-liquidation.
The company is aiming to wrap up the liquidation by Sunday, June 15 2025. Gift cards will be accepted at all locations until Sunday, April 6, 2025, but any loyalty points cannot be used.
Which Hudson’s Bay stores will stay open?
There will be six stores which will omitted from the liquidation sales and are currently set to remain open – for now — after the other stores close their doors this summer. Those six stores are: Hudson’s Bay Toronto Flagship (176 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario), Hudson’s Bay Yorkdale Shopping Centre (3401 Dufferin Street, North York, Ontario), Hudson’s Bay Hillcrest Mall (9350 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill, Ontario), Hudson’s Bay Montreal Flagship (585 Saint-Catherine Street West, Montreal, Quebec), Hudson’s Bay CF Carrefour Laval (3003 Boul. le Carrefour, Laval, Quebec), Hudson’s Bay CF Fairview Pointe Claire (6790 Trans-Canada Hwy, Pointe-Claire, Quebec).
The liquidation comes after the company filed for creditor protection on Friday, March 7, saying it was facing financial difficulties stemming from lower consumer spending, reduced downtown traffic and trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. The company was able to pull the above six stores out of liquidation because sales have been so high since its creditor protection case began earlier this month. However, if it doesn’t find a long-term solution, Hudson’s Bay lawyer Ashley Taylor said that those six locations could eventually be liquidated as well.
On the other hand, if it secures additional financing, he said the company may be able to save additional stores.
What about the Hudson’s Bay stores being liquidated?
73 Hudson’s Bay stores across Canada will being liquidation on Monday, March 24. Those stores include: 32 locations in Ontario, 16 locations in British Columbia, 13 locations in Alberta, 13 locations in Quebec, 2 locations in Manitoba, 2 locations in Nova Scotia, and 2 locations in Saskatchewan.
Hudson’s Bay didn’t say how deep discounts will be during the liquidation running until Sunday, June 15. Expect discounts to grow steeper as time goes by, however you should be aware that discounts get bigger as there is a more limited selection of items left on the shelves. Stores will not be restocking merchandise.
All sales will be final at all of the liquidating stores across the country.
Hudson’s Bay will accept payments by debit, credit, cash, and gift card during the liquidation process. Gift cards will be accepted at all locations until Sunday, April 6, 2025, but the Hudson’s Bay loyalty program has been paused and any loyalty points accumulated in the past cannot be used.
Stores will accept employee and retiree discounts reduced to 10 per cent on items that aren’t labelled as clearance up to Sunday, April 6.
Hudson’s Bay will vacate all liquidating stores by Monday, June 30, 2025.
What happens to staff?
The liquidation places 9,364 jobs at risk, the bulk of which are in Ontario. The winding down of Hudson’s Bay will amount to one of the largest mass terminations in the country since Sears Canada closed its doors for good on January 18, 2018
