A Look Back At Lady Gaga’s 4 Vogue Covers

Earlier this month Lady Gaga covered Vogue for the fourth time! The multihyphenate artist appeared on the cover of the American edition of Vogue to help promote her starring role as Harley Quinn in Todd Phillips’s much-hyped film Joker: Folie à Deux.

Though she didn’t land her first American Vogue cover until 2011, Lady Gaga has been appearing in the pages of the fashion bible since the “The Arts Issue” in December 2009, when she appeared in a Hansel and Gretel themed shoot with accompanying interview.

In celebration of Gaga’s latest cover…Here’s a look back at all four of Lady Gaga’s striking Vogue covers.

March 2011
Lady Gaga’s very first American Vogue cover was on its “power” March 2011 issue. Shot by famed photographer Mario Testino and styled by Tonne Goodman, Gaga wore a sand-coloured jumpsuit dress with rose gold ribbons from Haider Ackermann’s spring/summer 2011 collection and a blunt pink wig, which came courtesy of hair stylist Orlando Pita for Orlo Salon.

The photoshoot took at place a few months earlier at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium on November 23, 2010.

An extensive fashion spread of Gaga was featured inside the March 2011 issue of Vogue accompanied by a story written by longtime contributor Jonathan Van Meter.

September 2012
The following year Lady Gaga returned to grace the cover of Vogue’s September 2012 issue, which was hailed as their “Special Anniversary Issue.” This time Gaga was shot by famed fashion duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and was styled by the legendary Grace Coddington. Gaga wore a show-stopping magenta-purple patchwork silk mermaid gown by Marc Jacobs gown, from the designer’s fall/winter 2012 collection. Her teased hair was done by Luigi Murenu and her makeup was done by Lucia Pieroni.

Lady Gaga was photographed in homage to the very first cover of Vogue, “A Debutante” from 1892, while the cover story was once again written by Jonathan Van Meter.

Fun fact: At the time the September 2012 issue of Vogue was the largest issue in the magazine’s history.

A Look Back At Lady Gaga's 4 Vogue Covers - October 2018

October 2018
The third time that Lady Gaga covered American Vogue was the October 2018 issue, when she celebrated her role in A Star Is Born and 10 years in the music industry. In the cover shot, photographed by Dutch-American fashion photographer duo Inez and Vinoodh, a stripped-down, platinum-haired Gaga wore a black Brandon Maxwell dress and a pair of Ana Khouri earrings.

An in-book spread, styled by Tonne Goodman, revealed a similarly pared-down version of the singer and actress who was once known for her over-the-top fashions. The accompanying story titled “Lady Gaga Opens Up About A Star Is Born, MeToo, and a Decade in Pop” was written by Jonathan Van Meter.

October 2024
Lady Gaga’s latest Vogue cover was inspired by her role as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux, and was lensed by photographer Ethan James Green and styled by Alex Harrington. Photographed during her stay in Paris in July earlier this year, the cover photo showcases Gaga wearing a blue embroidered trompe-l’œil synthetic hair coat from Balenciaga’s fall/winter 2024 haute couture collection. Her hair was done by Frederic Aspiras, while her makeup was done by Sarah Tanno-Stewart.

Inside the October 2024 issue the story “Lady Gaga on Joker: Folie à Deux, Getting Engaged, and the Joy of Making Pop Music Again,” once again written by Jonathan Van Meter, was accompanied by another amazing fashion spread.
