If you have been on the internet in recent weeks you are probably already aware that Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, has been at the centre of public controversy for her absence from the public spotlight. The 42-year-old wife of Prince William and mother of their three children, has faced intense tabloid and online speculation about her health and well-being since the beginning of January, when she was hospitalized for nearly two weeks following a planned abdominal surgery. Kate’s absence from the public eye, coupled with a lack of details about her surgery and her recovery, peaked public interest and ultimately caused speculation to grow.
Two weeks ago interest in the growing mystery of Kate’s whereabouts really started to increase… 29Secrets even wrote a light-hearted piece on Kate’s whereabouts and the internet falling down the royal family rumour rabbit hole.
And, then matters only got worse for the royal family.
If you’ve been on social media in the last few days, especially on X (formerly known as Twitter) or TikTok, you are well aware of the global firestorm of speculation and complex conspiracy theories that have taken over… most of it is without any factual basis: Kate has run away, she has changed her appearance, she has a love rival, she is anorexic, she was beaten, she is in a wheelchair, she is involved in a murder, she is filing for a divorce, she is dead. No matter what is really going on it is clear that the royals have totally lost control of the narrative.
The memes and rumours were so numerous that William’s office issued a snarky comment recently: “His focus is on his work and not on social media.” But, that wasn’t enough to quiet the masses. So, on Sunday March 10, the palace released a simple family photograph that was intended to show the world that Kate was OK. Instead the image, an intended fire blanket, instead acted as gasoline and now every corner of the internet seems to be playing a guessing game, which is ranging from measured analysis to outright conspiratorial conjecture.
“Royal press management isn’t easy. No palace job is,” Catherine Mayer, author of Charles: The Heart of a King, said in a post on X. “But this doesn’t explain serial mistakes in royal comms.”
Here is a look at the timeline of events and drama—inducing conspiracy theories since Kate’s last public appearance.
December 25, 2023: Kate’s last public appearance
Christmas Day marks Kate’s last verified public appearance. Kate, following royal tradition, joined members of the royal family as they attended Christmas morning church services at Sandringham, the family’s country residence north of London. “The doctors had to take drastic decisions at that moment because of the complications that arose,” Calleja penned, per the Times. “The decision was to put her in an induced coma. They had to intubate her. There were serious complications that they didn’t expect because the operation went well, but the postoperative period didn’t go so well.”
According to the report, Kate’s life was allegedly “in great danger” after her operation. Calleja had also apparently spoken with an aide from the royal household in a “completely confidential manner.”

February 1, 2024: A response to the Concha Calleja story
On Thursday, February 1, a palace source denies Calleja’s story that Kate was place in a medically induced coma.
“It’s total nonsense,” the insider affirmed to the Times. “No attempt was made by that journalist to fact-check anything that she said with anyone in the household. It’s fundamentally, totally made-up, and I’ll use polite English here: it’s absolutely not the case.”

Social media sleuths kick things off by immediately pointing out apparent discrepancies with the picture. By Sunday evening, four of the world’s largest news agencies — The Associated Press, Reuters, Getty Images and Agence France-Presse — pull the image from circulation due to apparent manipulation and all issue what are known as “kill notices,” an advisory for broadcasters and newspapers not to use the image.
“While there was no suggestion the image was fake, AP pulled the photograph from circulation because it did not meet its photo standards,” the Associated Press explained following the retraction. “AP’s editorial standards state that images must be accurate. The rumours were so rampant that both the photographer, Jim Bennett, and photo syndication service, Goff Photos, deny the rumours on March 16, insisting the photo has not been altered. The agency said that the photos “have been cropped and lightened” but “nothing has been doctored.”

The type of cancer has not been disclosed. According to Kensington Palace, Kate started a course of preventative chemotherapy in late February.
The full text of Kate’s statement reads:
I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst I have been recovering from surgery.
It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.
In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.
This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.
As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK.
As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits.
Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both.
We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.
At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.
