The official trailer for Good American Family has been released, offering a first look at the upcoming drama which is based on a chilling real-life story. The series draws inspiration from the real story of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian orphan who has a rare form of dwarfism known as spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, and her adoptive parents, Kristine and Michael Barnett, who claimed that she lied about her age and terrorized their family from 2010 to 2013. The limited series features an all-star cast including Ellen Pompeo (also an executive producer), Mark Duplass, Imogen Faith Reid, Dulé Hill, Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue, and Jenny O’Hara.
“Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma, this compelling drama is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism,” a brief synopsis for the show reads.
The summary continues, “But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. As they defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and what her future holds, in a showdown that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom.”
Narrated by Pompeo, who stars as Natalia Grace’s adoptive mother Kristine Barnett, the clip opens with a voiceover: “I’ve always considered myself blessed. I’ve known I was put on this Earth to build a world where all kids can feel safe.”
As the trailer Good American Family continues, however, things are not how they seem.
Good American Family marks Pompeo’s first major role since Grey’s Anatomy debuted back in 2005. After playing Meredith Grey for over 400 episodes, she stepped down as a series regular in 2023 but has continued to make guest appearances.
Created and executive produced by Katie Robbins, the Good American Family series, which has eight episodes in total, will premiere on Wednesday, March 19 with the release of the first two episodes. Following the premiere, one episode will be released weekly.
All eight episodes of the Good American Family limited series will stream on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ in Canada.
